If Del Piero goes to Euro 2008, he’ll equal a record
By: Francesco | May 1st, 2008Interesting article today from goal.com. It says that if Alex Del Piero’s name is on Donadoni’s 23 man final roster this May, he will equal a record. What is this record? The number of final tournaments played by an Italian player. Of course, it’s no surprise that the man that holds the record right now is none other than Paolo Maldini. Maldini played for Italy seven times at final tournaments: Euro ‘88, World Cup 1990, World Cup 1994, Euro ‘96, World Cup 1998, Euro 2000, and World Cup 2002. It could’ve been 8 if Italy had qualified for Euro ‘92.
Del Piero is the only current player with six tournaments to his name, making appearances at Euro ‘96, World Cup ‘98, Euro 2000, World Cup 2002, Euro 2004, and World Cup 2006. So if Del Piero goes to Euro 2008, he will tie the great Paolo Maldini as the Italian player who has played the most tournaments. (by the way, if you didn’t click the links, they contain pictures of the players at each tournament.)
This is when I go on my rant:
Now, I’m not doubting that Del Piero is a great player who will go down as one of the best Italian players of all time and most probably the best Juventus player of all time, but does anyone else think that Del Piero potentially being the Italian player who has been to the most tournaments as a little sad? I guess this is when I go into my Baggio nostalgia. The Great Divino Codino only got to play for Italy 56 times, scoring 27 goals. Del Piero has played for Italy 85 times, scoring 27 goals. There is no doubt that Baggio was the best Italian fantasista of the modern era, and the fact that he only played in 3 tournaments with the Azzurri was a crime. OK, in Euro ‘96, Sacchi had it out for him. In Euro 2000, Zoff blamed it on his lack of playing time with Inter (thanks Marcello Lippi). In World Cup 2002, Trapattoni blamed it on his fitness. In Euro 2004, Trapattoni blamed it on his age. I still believe that if Baggio had been a different nationality he would’ve been treasured by managers and would’ve been a protagonist with the national team until he retired. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Even Juventus fans can agree with me that Del Piero has never been the same since the injury suffered vs. Udinese in 1998. Before that, he was pretty amazing. And let’s add he has always been hyped up before tournaments before doing nothing at the actual torunament. (The goal against Germany in 2006 was probably the best thing he has ever done with the Nazionale). Baggio on the other hand, was always clutch. World Cup 1990- did great but was unfairly benched vs. Argentina. World Cup 1994- we know the story, single-handedly brought Italy to the final, but idiots around the world just remember him for the penalty. World Cup 1998- Started out great, but then Cesare Maldini succumbed to pressure and started to play an unfit Del Piero. I guess we can’t do anything now though, now I can only console myself by watching Baggio compilations all day.
Go ahead Juventus fans, rip me apart.

id rather not see inzaghi leading a 4-5-1. im just not a fan of anything but a tall/powerful man leading the line, id say the same about del piero. toni….sadly no iaquinta it looks, so if toni goes out we’re gonna have to switch to something different.
given the form of the strikers, donadoni should just play a damn 4-4-2 already. inzaghi, del piero, and di natale all fit better in it, and it still allows a winger like camoranesi.

Sof I have news for you, Di Natale is a virtual starter!
Baggio is not the greatest attacker since … he is just the greatest attacker the country has ever produced in the Azzurri shirt.
Don’t be ignorant about Totti. In the last 4 majors Italia have reached 2 finals, and Totti was named to the all tournament team in BOTH, the best player in the whole of 2000 and was fantastic in the quarters and semis in 06, plus he won the Australia match. 2004 the country couldnt cope without him and 2002 there was a scandal, Totti was sent off by an Ecuadorian ref after torching Ecuador in the group game and running them ragged behind Bobo. Del Piero hasn’t come close to Totti’s international efforts, don’t be silly.
Donadoni will play his usual 433-451: Toni, flanked by Di Natale on the left, Camo on the right, and the midfield 3: either Ambrosini or Gattuso flanking Pirlo in the centre, De Rossi on the other side.
More intriguing for me is the full backs. Zambrotta a certainty, but right or left pending on Grosso or Panucci?

Just shows what that ‘all tournament team’ rubbish is all about. He was pedestrian throughout the 06 WC. As to 04, awful. When he was playing Italy were nothing and on the verge of a disastrous first round exit. When Cassano came in for him things turned around, they ended playing the best half of football of any team in the tournament. Not enough in the end but at least there was something to remember them by.

Donadoni should take the following strikers to the Euros:
Toni, Borriello, Di Natali, Del Piero and Cassano.
If a sixth is needed it’s a toss up between Quagliarella or Inzaghi.

What the hell are you trying to suggest, that Totti didn’t deserve the red card in 04?

A it’s quite clear you didn’t see the tournament after Australia match.
He was positively out of his mind against Ukraine in the quarters … http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/4991620.stm
And his 120 mins v Germany were outrageous considering the injury, metal in his ankle, etc.
Cassano played great in the first half against Sweden, but vanished like the rest of the team when they needed a 2nd goal. Had Vieri converted any of the chances Totti served up for him v Denmark the Azzurri would have advanced no matter the Sweden score.
A, have you ever … erm … watched football?

A toss up? Quagliarella has been there for 2 years for Donadoni yet you think he’s taking Cassa’ and Del both? Quagliarella is already reserved a seat on the plane, ragazzo.
You’ll get one if you’re lucky, and it won’t be Cassa’.

You need to read more carefully, I said ’should’ take not ‘will’ take. Big difference.
Germany semi? Just please stop there, you’re starting to rock yourself. What exactly did he do against Germany but but spend two thirds of the 90mins trying to con the ref into giving calls for him? It took him long enough to find out it’s not working and it’s time to play football.
I didn’t watch the Ukraine game but in the rest he was average, in the Ronaldinho cum lately type of occupying the attentions of a defender or two from time to time mold.

And this concludes this portion of the Totti debate … for obvious reaons.
BTW, I hate to admit this but I feel like Iaquinta is a CERTAINTY to go.

And then your trying to tell me Donadoni knows what he’s doing with his striker selections?
*rolls eyes*

No, I didn’t say he knows what he’s doing. I don’t think Quags is Azzurri quality now, nor did I when he scored those two wonder goals a while ago.

Cassano should be there because he can provide creativity and spark that others upfront lack.

This is who SHOULD be called up:
Toni, Ale Del Piero, Boriello, Inzaghi, and PalladinoI would hate to see Quagliarella there, even on the bench. He is terrible. I never ever thought he even deserved a spot on the Nazionale. His best position? Left Bench. I could deal with it if di natale was selected mostly because I don’t think I have much of a choice. Palladino would be a good choice though, as he is quite versatile and can be used as a striker or on the wing. It could work to our advantage.

Cassano is the only genius the country has in the running. Of course, he is not dependable (thinks Donadoni).
I would take him without thinking twice. We simply cannot win this tournament without a fantasy player of the top quality. Di Natale, for all his growth, is nowhere near and has never played in such.

Then what are we arguing about when we agree on so much?

I’m telling you Iaquinta is going, which means someone is not.
U think DP and Pippo go?

LOLOLOL good point!
What I think should happen and what I predict will happen are not the same.

I think he’s dependable. He wasn’t dependable at Real but hey even Canavaro isn’t/wasn’t dependable at Real.

I meant his behaviour at Samp, the meltdowns, the attacking refs, the sending offs, etc.!

i have to agree with cazz here. we simply need the genius that is cassano. italy can’t play without the fantasy player. when italy is down in the dumps u expect di natale or quagliarella to produce a moment of magic or cassano??

I’m sure he’d be OK for a 3 week tournament.

Everyone is complaining that Del Piero doesn’t deliver for Italy in Big Tournaments and that he is selfish for saying he only wants to play striker from now on. but it is because he is missused that he has often been quiet for Italy in the big tournaments. He is simply asking to play in the position he does at club level and maybe he can put his international reputation straight that way.
I must say that he is quite old now and lacks a bit of pace but the experience he can bring (to the position he NORMALLY plays) will be invaluable. I don’t see him playing every minute of every game though, he is no longer a 90 minute full tournement player. True, it may be a risk to bring a sometimes erratic and aging player like DP into the team, but it could pay off really well because we all know what he can and has done throughout his career.
