Video of the week: Italy’s top 100 goals at the World Cup

By: Francesco | August 12th, 2008

With the Olympics going on and National Team fever ready to sweep back in when Lippi makes his first call-ups of his second tenure on Saturday, I thought I’d dedicate this video of the week to the Nazionale. With World Cup 2010 qualifying just around the corner, here’s a segment from a Gazzetta dvd called “La Grande Storia della Nazionale” showcasing Italy’s top 100 goals in World Cup qualifying and in the final tournaments. The videos count down from 100. Enjoy:

    Great stuff Fra! :)

For nÂș1 the choice seems rather odd… Italy 4-3 Germany 1970 was one of the best World Cup games ever (no debate there), but the goal they chose was far from exceptional.

By the way, I didn’t have time to watch the entire thing… what rank did they give Fabio Grosso’s 2006 goal vs. Germany?

Well Italy-Germany 1970 is considered by most Italians to be the best Italian National Team game of all time (along with Italy-Brazil 1982) so I guess that factored in. Also, if you think Rivera’s goal was far from exceptional, please Marco look at it again. It’s not the most spectacular goal you’ll ever see, but it’s the ease of how Rivera finished the ball. With the ball coming towards him, Rivera throws the goalkeeper off with a little body feint, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and then slotting the ball home with a inch perfect finish (what the Italians call the colpo di billiardo). It’s not flashy and fancy, but it is exquisite to watch.

But maybe it’s just me going nuts and showing my Milan bias towards Rivera and my love of the fantasista position as a whole. :)

no goals from the 2006? the goals against ghana germany and ukraine were all very good, and deserve at least a place in the top 100

It’s pre-2006 World Cup; the series (there are actually 10 DVDs) was released in the run up to Germany.
