Well, it’s that time of the summer again. I’m off to the old country tomorrow, so the blog will be inactive for a couple of weeks. However I will be back right before the start of the Serie A season so I’ll be able to maybe get a mega-preview up like last season and we’ll wrap up the important news that happened while I was gone. Here’s a few reminders so you don’t forget to watch these upcoming matches:

August 8th, Italian SuperCoppa in Beijing between Inter and Lazio.

August 11th, the new cycle of Italy U-21’s play a friendly vs. Russia. We get to see what the new Italy U-21 side looks like (call-ups will be made August 6th).

August 12th, the Nazionale led by Marcello Lippi is back in action with a friendly vs. Switzerland. Following August friendly tradition, this will most probably be a bad loss, the media will complain for a couple of days, and then everyone will forget about it.

After that, it’s time to get excited for Serie A 2009/2010! (and there will also be some Coppa Italia action and there are a host of other preseason friendlies going on but you can follow those on the individual club blogs)

This is the new Nike ball that you will see being kicked around next season. It’s called the Nike Total 90 Ascente and will also be used in the EPL and in Spain’s La Liga. The ball will be used in all Serie A, Serie B, and Coppa Italia matches as well as the SuperCoppa this August and in all Primavera matches. Serie A is relatively new to the whole one match ball for the whole league system, as only last year they signed a league-wide deal with Nike for the first time. Before that each team was responsible to provide their own match balls for home games. More pictures after the jump.

Both sides went into this game knowing it would define their season. Both sides basically had the exact situation. They both performed under expectations this season, and both have managers that don’t really look like they will be in charge next season. Also, because of their poor season, both clubs were looking for a backdoor into Europe. Both sides were at full strength and the Stadio Olimpico was packed with mostly Lazio fans as expected but the Samp fans really did turn as well. There were around 20,000 of them sitting in the Curva Sud and they were color coordinated with Sampdoria’s colors. It was a great atmosphere.

I won’t go into details of the game, because by now you probably all know the result and catch watch the highlight video I’m posting. But the squads were even for most of the match and both sides were really afraid to lose, which lead to penalty kicks. Both sides had their spells of domination, even though the second half was mostly all Lazio. Mauro Zarate showed all his skill and his superstar potential with his goal and overall play, while Antonio Cassano was never served well and couldn’t really make a big impact on the game, although he started the play for Sampdoria’s equalizer. Giampaolo Pazzini also had a big game, scoring a great goal and fighting like a warrior for 120 minutes.

And of course, football always has it’s redemption stories. Fernando Muslera last season looked like one of the worst signings ever made in Italian football history, but this season he has played brilliantly and became the hero of the penalty shootout, stopping Cassano’s and Campagnaro’s penalties.

So what does the win mean for Lazio? Well, the Biancocelesti finally have a project to build upon. They have an exciting young superstar-in-the-making in Mauro Zarate who really is a joy to watch along with a nice mix of veterans and young players that when on form are a really good side. With a few more good signings this summer Lazio can make a big case next season to become a regular top 6 side. Although the only uncertainty remains manager Delio Rossi. His contract expires on June 30th and reports earlier in the year were that there was a 90% chance he would be leaving this summer. Then when Lazio qualified for the Coppa final it was said if he lost he would be on his way out. Even with the win though, it doesn’t look like he really resolved his differences with Claudio Lotito and there’s still a good chance he won’t be managing Lazio next season. Maybe the tears he cried after the win were because he knew he would never experience something like this again? I think it’s now at 70/30 that he leaves.

What does the loss mean for Sampdoria? The loss signifies a very disappointing season for the blucerchiati. Last season Samp were in contention for a Champions League spot until the very last days of the season, and this year they have just been a mediocre mid-table side. Yes, they lost Christian Maggio from last season but overall the squad was not changed and they should’ve done a lot better. Walter Mazzarri is a good young manager who has a bright future but it remains to be seen if he will be in charge next season. At times his insistence on playing the 3-5-2 hurts the squad, and his player selection at times is questionable. Last year Samp played flowing football, the squad would attack and defend with ease. This year the team doesn’t have a style of play. For most of the year it has been “give the ball to Cassano and let’s hope he does something”, and as brilliant a player Cassano is he can’t do it all, he needs help. In regards to Cassano, we’ll now see how loyal he is to Sampdoria this summer. Now fully rehabilitated and back to his old self, does he really want to stick around another year in Genoa where there will be no European football or does he want to challenge himself and make the move to a bigger side in hopes to impress Mr. Lippi? I think at the moment it’s 50/50. Cassano owes a lot to Sampdoria but Sampdoria also owe a lot to Cassano. If there’s a good project in place next season (with maybe Roberto Mancini taking the helm) he could stay but there’s also a chance he could leave.

Finally, with Lazio winning silverware this season, of course they had to poke fun at their Giallorosso cousins. They made t-shirts that have a picture of Zarate celebrating and Totti crying and it says “Zarate Campione, e tu Zero Titoli” (Zarate is a champion, and you have no titles). Here’s a picture of Dabo wearing the t-shirt.

Tomorrow is a big day for Lazio and Sampdoria. Two sides who have performed under expectations throughout the season have a chance to salvage their season by winning a trophy, and more importantly, a place in the Europa League (I think the new name is so stupid) next season. Both sides have not won the Coppa in a long time (Lazio haven’t lifted it since 2004, Sampdoria since 1994; both sides have won it 4 times in their history).

The pre-match press conferences have been pretty much the same. Both Walter Mazzarri and Delio Rossi have stated that since it is a one leg final both sides will have to concentrate and nerves will play a big part. Both also have said that Lazio has a slight advantage since the game is being played at the Stadio Olimpico, however there will be around 20,000 Sampdoria fans in attendance. Also, a win will be the first ever trophy for both of these managers.

It would also be the first trophy for either club under the regime of their current owners. Claudio Lotito took over Lazio in the summer of 2004 right after their Coppa Italia victory and therefore has not experienced a trophy in his 5 years in charge. Riccardo Garrone took over Sampdoria in 2002 when they fell down to Serie B and led them back to the promised land. He has not seen any victories either, although the Primavera side did win the Primavera Scudetto and Coppa Italia last season.

Then there is the economic factor. The prize money for winning the Coppa Italia is around 3 million euro, while the winner will also participate in this August’s SuperCoppa in Beijing and that will net them another 2 million euro. And then there is the qualification to the Europa League, which will net you 10 million euro if you make it all the way but will also guarantee you around 5 million euro just for playing in the group phase. So both sides would love to put that money towards this summer’s transfer market. And of course, a lot of the Lazio and Sampdoria players have never won anything in their career to date, which makes it a lot more interesting and more special.

The game should be very interesting (and let’s not forget a game is always made interesting when Antonio Cassano is on the pitch) and everyone should be watching tomorrow.

The game kicks off at 2:45 PM EST and will be shown in the USA live on GolTV, and Rai Uno in Italy.

Here are some Coppa Italia promo videos for Sampdoria and Lazio showing their roads to the final:

For the last 4 years it was the same thing. Roma-Inter, Inter-Roma, Roma-Inter, Inter-Roma. It was starting to get boring and predictable. Finally, the Lega gave us a break this year. They put Inter and Roma on the same side of the bracket and therefore eliminated the chance of having another year of Giallorossi vs. Nerazzurri. So with Lazio’s win over Juventus and Samp’s win over Inter, we get a nice Lazio-Sampdoria final. Now many of you may love to see finals with two big teams, but I think Lazio-Sampdoria is going to provide lots of entertainment and be fun to watch. First, we have two teams taht haven’t won anything in a very long time. Lazio has been winless in 5 years (last winning the Coppa Italia in 2004), while Sampdoria haven’t lifted a trophy in 15 years (last winning the Coppa Italia in 1994). So both teams will be very motivated to go out there and win. Second, we have two of the most exciting players in Serie A going toe to toe: Antonio Cassano and Mauro Zarate. Both players have been playing brilliant football all season and have the ability to make a stadium go nuts. So I think on May 13 we’ll be glued to the tv sets.

Here’s a Sampdoria Coppa Italia game from 1994:

Lazio’s 2003-2004 Coppa Italia victory:

Today Lazio and Juventus went head to head at the Stadio Olimpico in the Coppa Italia semi-final 1st leg. Marcello Lippi was on hand to witness the match, and both sides were for the most part first choice (Del Piero and Buffon were rested for Juve). Lazio started with: Muslera, Lichtsteiner, Siviglia, Cribari, Kolarov; Foggia, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Manfredini; Rocchi, Pandev, while Juventus went with: Manninger, Grygera, Mellberg, Chiellini, Molinaro; Marchionni, Sissoko, Tiago, Nedved; Amauri, Iaquinta. Highlights after the jump.

The game started a little slow, but the Bianconeri emerged the stronger side in the first half. Lazio’s front trio was looking lively, but Juventus’ defense handled them well. Vincenzo Iaquinta seemed to have put Juve ahead in the 17th minute, but the goal was wrongly disallowed for offside. Replays showed that the World Cup winning striker timed his run well. Juve broke through in the 34th minute. Marco Marchionni trapped the ball with his thigh on the edge of the area and unleashed a volley with his left foot that might have been deflected as it went in pat Muslera. The first half finished 1-0 and Juve had a precious away goal. In the second half Lazio came out of the tunnel a different side. The Biancocelesti pushed forward as Juve looked slow and methodical. In the 64th minute, Lazio equalized. The ball scrambled in the box, but Goran Pandev, with his back to goal, turned around Claudio Marchisio and placed an angled drive past Manninger. It was 1-1, but Lazio wanted the win. They hit Juve again in the 77th minute. Pandev was the creator this time, threading through perfectly for Tommaso Rocchi who controlled and finished easily past Manninger. It was 2-1, and it is worthy to note that Rocchi is a Juventus youth product. Lazio controlled the result for the remainder of the match, and now take a 2-1 advantage into the 2nd leg. Juventus have to win in Torino now.

The quarter-final round of the Coppa Italia kicked off today, with Udinese-Sampdoria and Inter-Roma in action. Tomorrow Lazio takes on Torino while on February 4th Juventus will face Napoli. Today the left side of the bracket was decided as the winners of Udinese-Samp and Inter-Roma would face off in the semi-final. Summaries and highlights after the jump.

Sampdoria went through, defeating Udinese on penalties. Sampdoria (without Cassano) went ahead in the 55th minute when new signing Giampaolo Pazzini scored his first goal for the Blucerchiati with a nice angled drive. Later in the match Udinese were awarded a penalty and captain Antonio Di Natale stepped up and placed it in the lower left corner, Antonio Mirante almost saved it. Both sides defended in extra time and the game went to penalties, where Sampdoria triumphed 4-1. Antonio Mirante made crucial saves and led the Blucerchiati to the semi-final.

HIGHLIGHTS

In the other game, full strength Inter and Roma sides were on display at the San Siro. In the 10th minute, Adriano profited from a mishap at the back for Roma and calmly placed the ball past Brazilian goalkeeper Artur. Stankovic almost made it two with a nice scissor kick effort, but it hit the crossbar. Inter dominated most of the first half but Roma picked it up towards the end and then stepped it up in the second half, drawing level in the 61st minute with a beautiful shot from Rodrigo Taddei. However Inter struck immediately, as Artur made a miracle save on a Samuel header, but could do nothing about Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s rebound and Inter were ahead again. Roma pushed forward and had a number of chances but could not finish. Inter won and will play Sampdoria in the semi-final, while defending champions Roma have been eliminated.
