Champions League: Post-Mortem
By: Martha | April 25th, 2007
As you might expect, everyone at Milan was rueful but not without hope after the game, because that’s how they had to be. Oddo, who apparently has low expectations, declared the result “not bad,” and nicely pretended Dida wasn’t a complete disaster. Adriano Galliani, meanwhile, assured everyone his club has a 50-50 chance of winning the home leg and advancing — or, if you prefer, “50 probabilities on hundreds to pass the turn.”
As you also might expect, the best reaction of all came from Gattuso, who was furious with himself for having the nerve to get hurt (though not so hurt that he didn’t allegedly get into it with an Old Trafford steward after the game). When no one is watching, he’ll probably bet the crap out of his own foot for being so soft and letting the team down; hopefully that beating won’t change his prognosis, because at the moment he seems on-course to be back in time for the return leg. Which would be nice, since the game entirely changed when he went off — Brocchi is a bulldog in his own right, but he’s no Gattuso, and lacks Rino’s ability to bring the team together through sheer force of pissed-off will. Oh, and he also gave the ball away before Rooney’s second goal. (Oops.)
Most of the international press, on the other hand, remain obsessed with the perceived Who Rules More? battle between Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, and they’ve solemnly declared that Kaka won the day. But, you know, since Milan lost and everything, I’m not sure anyone not named “Crisitano” really cares. Kaka does lead the Champions League in scoring by a wide margin now, but if Milan don’t go on to win the tournament, it’s unlikely anyone will remember that by the time the summer ends.
Me, I’m going to try to think like the ever-optimistic Galliani: “We conceded a late goal against Bayern Munich as well, this seems to be our destiny, but we overcame that and can do so again … After the first leg against Bayern we were far more worried and upset than we are now … Manchester are extremely aggressive on home turf and I think they will lose that edge on their travels without this crowd pushing them on.” In other words, fingers crossed.

I don’t think it’s a bad result at all. A tie in aggregate, as long as at isn’t 5-5, assures them to advance without PKs. Roma beat Man U at home, so I don’t see why AC Milan can’t.
If it weren’t for Dida, this could have been a much worse result. Though you could argue that he should have saved the first two Man U goals, he did make a couple of spectacular saves to make up for it. He still looks afraid of the ball at times though.
Kaka was infinitely better than Ronaldo.

Milan absolutely can win this thing. I think the 2 away goals is huge. They win 2-1 at home and move on. Rino will be back (although espn said he is doubtful) and all will be good.

Ask me yesterday and I say I will give my ticket to my brother-in-law. Today, I am a lot more positive and think that Milan possibly get a win. Expect the worst, hope for the best no.:)

“Manchester are extremely aggressive on home turf and I think they will lose that edge on their travels without this crowd pushing them on.”
Exactly my thoughys. I think once Milan come home to play at the San Siro, we can take it home and get to the finals once again!

Jezuz, you guys are insane. Here is Manchester United without 8 of their key players, including Neville, Rio, Vidic in the back four, having to play a totally make-shift team, and nobody says anything? All you can talk about is Maldini (who is what..55 years old?) being injured and then Gattuso getting injured. BIG DEAL!? Manchester United are playing the best football in Europe. AC Milan should not even be playing in Europe because of their dirty tricks and bribes scandal. They will rightly be put out of their misery next week. Man United can smell the finals, and victory. They have had simply too many heartaches in the past few years, and their hunger will simply NOT be denied this time. You can feel it in their playing. This team is the future. AC Milan, apart from Kaka, is the past.

The “best football in Europe” and yet they can’t put away Middlesbrough. In reality, Man Utd are superb, systematic counterattackers that rely on their opponents’ willingness to push forward so they can look their best.
Besides, which eight “key players” are you speaking of? I think Saha is the only injured regular starter you didn’t name, while Milan ended up without Maldini, Gattuso, and Ronaldo at their full disposal. Perhaps Milan were worse off, especially since it was Gattuso’s replacement that gifted ManUtd’s winner.

I’m sorry, I’m still laughing at the suggestion that Rio Ferdinand being injured makes a difference to a soul in football.
But when you put it like that, RT, I think of course, United is morally and historically deserving of this Champions’ League victory. Milan shouldn’t bother. That’s just what football is all about, after all: he who is entitled, wins.
(Martha, I originally came here to tell you that you couldn’t have picked a better picture to soothe weary Milanisti hearts. Just. Score.)

Helloooo its okay guys we have two away goals postivity …and yes roma beat them at home and then lost 7:1 so on our part the worst hopefully is over we have got through old trafford only slightly bruised as opposed to comatised personally i blame that pasionate manchester crowd they are slightly ammusing and as for manchester playing the best football in Europe that is an exadgeration good football yes not the best. And this kaka ronaldo debate rewind back to the game what happens when Ronaldo has a “good” defender on him and by good i mean Nesta one of the best in the world ronoldo is not that great oh yes excellent player but kaka he literally has defenders falling over each other. Fingers crossed
