News Getting Better For Calcio
By: chris | March 6th, 2008
Yes, Roma beat Real Madrid again yesterday to advance to the “Elite Eight”, but even I’m sick of talking/hearing about it. So that’s all I have to say about that. (Alright, that’s a complete lie, I’m just sparing you.)
The picture posted the other day after Milan’s loss was a sad representation of what we thought were the final minutes of Paolo Maldini’s European career. Now? Hold up a second. Paolo’s backtracking and saying he may have another year in him…..
“The whole club are pushing for me to play another year,” the former Italy defender said in an interview with Sky Italia on Thursday night. “My knees are much better compared to three months ago and I’m playing as left-back, a role I left ten years ago. I love this sport and I love to train and play. “I still have plenty of energy. I know I should stick with what I said originally but I think only stupid people don’t change their minds just because they’ve said something in the past. Let’s wait and see.”
This is fantastic news, no matter who you’re a fan of. The man is the very definition of legend and the personification of class. Quite frankly, calcio is a better place when Paolo Maldini is involved. Nothing more really needs to be said. (Provided, of course, he doesn’t embarrass himself, but I can’t foresee that being any sort of an issue.)
And with Silvio back to reciting whimsical love sonnets to Andriy Shevchenko in the presses again, it’s almost like everything is back to normal in Milan again.

OMFG YESSSS. I just posted this over on the Milan Offside. To say that I would be elated if he went on for another season is an understatement. I just can’t get over him ending his career with the crappy ass season we’ve had. Over the summer, we spend a lot of money (finally), bring in some young reinforcements, and challenge for the scudetto and CL (hopefully), and still have our wonderful captain around. Sounds like an effing wonderful idea to me.
ALE PAOLO ALE!
PS. Haha, those Sheva rumors will never ever ever stop. What is it, something like 2 years running now? Mind, I wouldn’t mind having back. I won’t like, I’ve missed having a badass prolific striker up top.

Love how incredibly incoherent I’ve become since reading this. *Mind I wouldn’t mind having him back. I won’t lie, I’ve missed having a badass prolific striker up top.

It still might be his last game in Europe if Milan don’t sort out thier form and get to 4th though*
*I hope this is not the case because Maldini is somewhat a hero of mine and I’d like to be able to keep watching him.

i know he can’t play on forever (even though i want him to)but i’m not ready to let paolo go yet. one more year of him and sheva back in the mix would make me the happiest little italian on earth.

I was watching the Favre press conference earlier today, and all i can think of is Il Capitano Paolo giving the same speech soon. but now hopefully he’ll stay for one more season.

man, i love both men. although Favre hits closer to home being a Packer fan. both men are truly world class. you don’t get to watch legends every day…and for so long, either.

Chris - kind of disappointed you didn’t give a mega report on Roma’s win. They were fantastic.

I adore Maldini, but I adored Marvelous Marvin Hagler, too, and one of the greatest of his many epochal achievements was to know when to quit…
