Scattered Thoughts on Milan-Anderlecht
By: Martha | November 2nd, 2006
The good:
-Milan thrashed them, at least on the scoreboard. 4-1 looks mighty pretty.
-Look, goals! So that’s what they like!
-Kaka was his old, untouchable self for much of the first half and bits of the second.
-Gattuso and Brocchi on the pitch together. Has so much short, stubby ass-kicking power ever been collected in one midfield before?
-Maldini having to play. Ah, Maldini. I’m not happy about living in a world in which he’s not first choice.
-Cafu. Just Cafu. The running, the smiling, the constant gum-chewing. None of it (as opposed to him, sadly) ever gets old.
The bad:
-That was among the hairiest damn 4-1 wins I’ve seen in my life. Why was the entire last third of the game spent in the Milan area, in a state of utter chaos? I mean, I understand Anderlecht were throwing everyone forward and all, but Christ, could Milan deal with it like, I don’t know, a football team that’s trained together once or twice?
-If I’m not mistaken, a Milan player actually put a shot off HIS OWN POST. Oddly, he was under no pressure whatsoever and, to his credit, fielded it successfully and kicked it somewhere else on the second try.
-Nesta getting hurt. (I only put this in bad because I assume most people find it so. Me, I’ve grown to hate his casual, “I’m Nesta and therefore will be successful despite being lazy and dumb!” play over the past year or so. Great white hope my ass. Were you people watching the game against Palermo? WHAT WAS HE DOING?)
-Ancelotti losing his mind. In case you missed it, he’s decided — based on that performance, mind you — that Kaka is the “best in the world.” Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a great player who had a great fifty-or-so minutes and scored a very special goal. But to make such a pronouncement after this game? I mean, they were playing RSC Anderlecht, right? A team that plays in the world-renowned Jupiler League? Let’s wait until he humiliates at least, say, Udinese before we order the statue.
