Coppa Italia Roundup, Or: Aw, Mariano González Loves His Teammates!
By: Martha | November 30th, 2006
There were a couple Coppa Italia games last night and, as you might expect, severely under-strength teams were trotted out by everyone in sight, what with actual, important matches coming up in a few days. Sadly for the smaller clubs, however, “under-strength” for Inter and Roma means that people like Figo, Solari and Motella are on the pitch. And that, in turn, means they’re pretty much screwed. There were no miracles yesterday: Inter spanked Messina 4-0 (that’s 10 wins in a row, for those of you keeping track) to go through 5-0 on aggregate, while Roma beat Serie B side Triestina 2-0 and advanced to the last eight with a 4-1 aggregate advantage.
And, after Inter’s game, Mariano González took a moment to get serious and talk about his first goal for the club (and, possibly, his first headed goal EVER!): “Who am I dedicating it to? To my girlfriend and all my teammates.” I mean, can you feel the love? As long as he doesn’t try to touch them, I’m sure those lucky teammates appreciate the gesture.
