Another Award For Canna

By: Martha | December 19th, 2006

Third time's the charm. At an event with the completely surreal theme of Football Meets Mozart, the rumors suggesting wee Fabio Cannavaro would take home the FIFA World Player of the Year Award were proved true: He pipped (as the Brits like to say) Ronaldinho and that pesky Zidane for the trophy, which was awarded last night in Zürich. In a vote by players (though only captains — apparently they’re smarter) and coaches, Canna came out on top in a close-ish vote, with a total of 494 votes to Zidane’s 454; Ronaldinho finished third with 380 votes and old melon énorme himself, Thierry Henry, finished fourth. Canna’s only disappointment was probably the fact that, unlike at the Golden Ball ceremony, there were no hot female presenters with which he could make out.

In his acceptance speech, Canna was his typical pleasant, good-PR self, saying all the right things and praising everyone in sight: “I’m very thankful to my family, my club, and my team-mates. And, of course, I owe this award to all the people who helped me to get here. I promise I will work very hard in order to be here many times in the future.” (Zidane, meanwhile, told the masses he hoped they’d “remember what I’ve done for football.” It’s like he’s trying to make us lose respect for him, or something.) After the ceremony, the Azzurri captain was asked which player he thinks will be the Next Great Italian defender. His answer? A man in pink: Andrea Barzagli. Woo hoo! Palmero might be sliding gradually down the table, but hey, this is something.

Well Done Canna!! He deserved it. I can’t wait to hear what Raymond Domenech is going to say about this, apprently he took a crap in that cheap suit he wears after Canna won the Ballon D’or. Some of his remarks over the Ballon D’or were that it was a scandal, Henrey played in two finals, scored has scored more than 20 goals.

The World Cup, The (in reality and on the Pitch) Scudetto, Ballon D’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year. Come on Ray-monde, Thierry was 0 for 2 in Fianls that he played in, doesn’t do much for his case that you bring that up. It pretty much says he is a useless as an ashtray on a bike when he plays in finals.

Anyhow I couldn’t be happier for Cannavaro, played in every minute of every match in the World Cup, Captianed the winning side, he didn’t even get a yellow card on a side that conceeded 2 goals (an own goal and a penalty which shoud never have been awarded) and instead of scroing 20 goals he stopped likes of guys like Henry from getting any. And oh yeah the fianls he played in, his side won!!
