Adriano Has Good Excuses for Being an Ass. Really.
By: Martha | July 21st, 2007
There’s an interview in La Gazzetta this morning (most of which, of course, is in the print-only edition) in which Adriano details his own personal misery over the past two years, and pledges to “repay” Massimo Moratti for his support and assistance during the dark times. [Insert giant eye-roll here.]
See, all that drinking Adriano was doing? Missing training to party and all that? Well, he was doing it because he was sad about his father’s death, and his breakup with his girlfriend. (Which, obviously, means we’re not allowed to be disgusted with him, or to hope that the club get rid of his fat ass.) He’s sorry about all of that, but at the same time wants everyone to know that he never hurt any of his teammates or anyone involved with the club with his partying and, despite all his mistakes, never meant to cause problems. [Insert bigger eye-roll here.]
How old does this guy think he is, 12? Dude, you’re a grown ass man. No matter how sorry you say are, and no matter how difficult the circumstances, you still need to be responsible for your own damn actions. With Moratti apparently gleefully enabling all of Adriano’s self-pity and excuses, it’s a good thing Roberto Mancini is there to keep dragging him back to reality, and the world of adults. The man can apologize and explain all he wants; nothing matters unless his behavior changes, and I’m quite sure Mancio will continue to remind him of that.

I am quite happy Adriano has remained with the club. A rut is a rut. Atheletes are always defending themselves for acting in ways they shouldn’t have. Anyhow if he does what he says he is going to do, and that cannon of a left foot comes back to life, all of this will be water under the bridge. On form he is one of the most lethal strikers in the world. He just has to do what he says he will… Can he? I think so! SIAM TUTTI IN PIEDI PER QUESTO BRASILANO!! BATTI LE MANI, CHE IN CAMPO C’E ADRIANO!!

To be honest, and this is especially true with Recoba now on his way out, there is nothing I’d like to see more than Adriano dominating again. Inter winning a treble would be fantastic, yet doing so with Adriano leading the way would be even better.
I’m even willing to be sympathetic to his personal issues. I suppose admitting you’ve a problem is progress, right? However, he’s 25 and football careers do not last forever. Time to see some results, even if I do understand one can’t overcome 2+ bad years of football overnight.
This year has to be his final chance. If he flops again, perhaps it’ll be just in time to integrate Balotelli into the first team…
And Martha, Inter should hire you as Adriano’s personal counselor/ass-kicker.

The thing is, RT, as far as I can tell, he never says he’s stopping drinking or plans to do so. He’s just like “Yeah, things were shitty for a while, sorry.” But there doesn’t seem to be, say, a plan to change is ways or anything. I know I’m a bad person (who can only be so from afar — if they hire me to kick his ass I know I’d immediately turn Moratti-style sympathetic and be utterly useless), but it takes more than noticing a problem to fix it, you know?
That said, I’d LOVE to see him kicking ass again. During that short period last year when he was scoring goals and his confidence was back, he was awesome to watch and the whole team looked more lively.

And K, you’ve pinpointed the main reason I wouldn’t mind Cassano — his drama is way more fun than Adriano’s. Plus, there’s always a chance his form will come back and he’ll turn around and blow doors off Serie A. Which, you know, would be nice.

[...] but it’s not like that.” Hmm. I think maybe people say that because IT’S WHAT YOU FREAKING TOLD THEM YOU DID! [...]
