Footballer Vacations: The Exposé

By: Martha | June 14th, 2007

It's ok, we're engaged!Looks like it’s another slow news day in Italy, because La Gazzetta dello Sport has turned its sharp, investigative eye to the truly important subject of every summer: The Footballer Holiday.

Though the article is disappointingly short on holiday snaps, it nevertheless offers a frighteningly detailed breakdown of the travel destinations of various players. Many single boys, for example, seem to stay close to home, preferring a party with the (rich) tifosi in the exclusive resort of Milano Marittima — near San Marino — to more exotic locales. According to the Gazzetta, if you could afford to go there this summer, among those with whom you could do shots are such luminaries as Pippo and Simone Inzaghi, Fabio Quagliarella (in search of that well-deserved WAG, no doubt), Luca Toni and, if you go for the older type, Roberto Macini.

Venturing further afield, meanwhile, are Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini, who share a house in Miami and Adrian Mutu, who prefers beaches in Florida to those in Italy. Also in the states, apparently, are Macro Materazzi and his wife, who are in New York (I let them use my place, since I’m here in Portugal and all), as well as Christian Vieri — surely raising all sorts of hell in the Meatpacking District — and Billy Costucurta. What do Italian footballers do on holiday in the US, you ask? Well, according to the all-knowing Gazzetta, “They plunder the store of Abercrombie, cult of the shopping, crowd the restaurants more trendy and they are far from the delirium of the Italian sea.” (Man. Is there any more awesome mental image than Matrix going completely insane in Abercrombie & Fitch?)

The really good boys (and Adriano), though, go home to see Mom and Dad. So, rather than lying on a beach somewhere or burying themselves naked in a pile of tshirts bearing clever slogans, Rino Gattuso, Fabio Grosso and the Great Ibra are headed home to relax. If all goes well, then, we won’t see any more alarming photos of Adriano for at least a few months. Fingers crossed.

Dare I ask who the revellers in your picture are?

If it’s Nesta and Maldini I’d rather not know [I think].

Hahahaaa! You’re a better person than I, roswitha. (It’s Gila and the fiancée, supposedly.)

So if I see Billy, Barzagli, or Bobo walking around Fifth Avenue I’ll be sure to say hello and take a picture (and for World Cup Winner Andrea, I’ll sing for him a little po-po-po-po).

I’m not sure how I’ll react if I meet Materazzi… I probably won’t care and I’ll just ignore him, and if he’s with his children I definitely WON’T sing the catchy “Materazzi: figlio di putana” song.

If he’s not with the kids, maybe I’ll just sing it and run. Though Marco might be more scared of ME than I of him; today I’m wearing my Juve Jacket.

ps: the line from the translated article

“The aliens are still more attack you to the own earth”

is VERY ominous. Should I be worried?

Man, Gila’s woman looks sorta pasty in that shot. Not that I’m doubting that she is a hottie or anything.

It is kinda funny to think about seeing footballers vacationing here, but it makes sense. Who but the crazy folks like us who follow this stuff religiously would recognize them? I mean, I could introduce my Roman buddy as World Cup winner (insert any name here, except maybe Totti or Matrix) and people would be like, “Wow, you won a World Cup?”. Actually, I might need to look into having him pretend to be a rich footballer to pick up chicks at bars. This could work.

Yeah, the reason they come to the US is b/c no one will recognize them. The only name most people know is “Beckham”.

But why does everyone go to Florida in the summer? Don’t they know the hurricane season is coming??

Maybe we should pool our resources together, Muddia.

I bought a replica World Cup, and she’s lovely: a foot high, gold patina, and HEAVY (like 25 lbs). I bring her out for special occasions (Columbus Day Parade, Marathon, Halloween, My Birthday) and she’s looks so real that people stop and ask me if they can hold it and take pictures with it (even AFTER I tell them it’s a replica).

It’s a great work out too; I walk around like Cannavaro, holding the cup overhead with two hands, and it hurts.

The Future Mrs. Gila is actually sort of adorable, Muddia (she’s the one on the left). Though, yeah, it’s hard to tell from that angle.

If I saw Matrix, it would take IMMENSE self-control (which I do not have) not to talk to him as if he’s my brother’s buddy from college. I have a strong feeling he’d respond in kind, family or not. He’s just a normal dude, albeit with an unusual amount of ink in his skin.

Bobo I’d follow, just to see what he got up to — you know every once of his nights is spectacularly.

And Mike, regarding the aliens: Just to be safe, I’d bust out the tin foil hat when you take your Cup on its side walk tour.

Not only hurricane season, Nelly, but isn’t just obscenely hot down there right now?

Really, people should pay more attention to retirees habits. They’ve been around long enough to know how things work, and they go down there in the WINTER, and come north in the summer. *shaking head* Footballers.

A&F?!? Surely not. I’d figured the best of the best would dress like me. Sexy. I guess they don’t mind buying shirts made from tablecloth fabric.

Ok, I definitely won’t sing the song to Marco, no matter what. I will, however, ask him all about his adorable Rainbow Brite tattoos, and ask if he drew them himself.

I’ll also inquire if Matrix has any tattoos that help him to remember confusing things, other than his player number and birthday… Like maybe his mom’s phone number, or ATM password, or his home address in case he gets lost?

From that pic Martha, I’d say she surpasses adorable and reaches hottie status. But not the status that I made up(and vetted with a few folks) to describe Giorgia Palmas, who is like the perfect storm of cute/adorable and hot.

Speaking of, Mike, do you remember that tiny tattoo Scottie Pippin had (or has, presumably) on his arm? I’m not the only one who thinks it was his locker combination, am I?

Muddia, she’s frustratingly elusive, but may be involved today (depending on if I decided to go skank or car-wreck-fascinating).

No, I don’t remember Pip’s tat. I never liked the Bulls, being a Knicks fan (’cept for Jordan, even Del Piero loves Jordan), but I haven’t watched any bball for over 10 years. Not since OJ Simpson ruined the sport for me forever.

It was like 1995(?), I was watching a Knicks play-off game on NBC one saturday afternoon, and I missed the end of the game because those idiots at NBC decided to show footage of a white ford bronco run a muck on the west coast.

Now granted, it was one of the biggest stories of that decade, but still: I was in the middle of a fkn game.

If I can trudge on without the Charm and Charisma of Marv, cross-dresser with a heart of gold, than I can live the remainder of my life without Clyde.

You know, maybe I should give “basket” another chance; the soap opera plot lines get more and more like Serie A each season. However, any sport without relegation is kinda like a soap without amnesia -you miss out on at least 50% of the possible drama.

Sorry Mike, everyone can get on the Bulls bandwagon, except Knicks fans (past or present). You can thank Anthony Mason and John Starks.

    Especially John Starks.
