Your Regular Brazilian Milanese Update: Today, Pato and Adriano
By: Martha | December 17th, 2007
I just wrote this up for the front page, but it clearly needs to be discuss here, as well: Silvio Berlusoni claims Carlo Ancelotti told him that, if he keeps the form he’s been showing in training, Pato will “get 30 goals by June.” I mean … what?!
Do they want this kid to fail? Is Luciano Moggi secretly paying off the Milan brass to put so much pressure on the kid that he crumbles into dust? Berlusconi, obviously, is the not a man anyone should look to for measured and rational behavior but, even if Ancelotti isn’t the one who came up with the 30 goals projection, he’s been equally unrestrained in his praise. At this rate, if Pato doesn’t lift Milan up on his shoulders and carry them to the Scudetto and the Champions League and Coppa titles, as well as make Paolo Maldini young again (with only a little bit of help from Kaka and his boy JC), he’s going to look like a failure.
At the other end of the expectation spectrum, meanwhile, is our friend Adriano. All reports indicate he’s happy as a clam in Brazil: Smiling all the time, not drinking, and enjoying his training with Sao Paulo. He’s enjoying himself so much, in fact, that even Inter are admitting he wants to stay (which, as Adriano can tell them, is the first step in dealing with a problem). As a result, the stories about him spending the rest of the season on loan in Brazil are back on again, this time with a greater ring of truth to them. Even if he’s healthy and fit, it’d be hard for Adriano to get back into the Inter squad (though Hernan Crespo is practically begging to be displaced), and it can only help the club if he plays somewhere and rediscovers his form. What reason do they have for not letting him go?

I’d say to protect their own ass in case he were to rediscover his brilliant form somewhere else (Italy or any other potential Inter Champions League competitor). Shame on Inter.

I don’t think Moggi is doing anything all that secretly.

excellent post about pato…seriously, what the hell, berlusconi? i mean really, im as uber excited as the next milan fan to see him play, and i really want him to do well, but the amount of praise theyre lavishing on him is ridiculous. they need to tone it down. i feel like he’s gonna snap one of these days during training…

Roberto, we’ve always got something to throw at you, no matter how well your team plays. It’s great for the rest of us!
Thanks, Hana — it’s freaky how well he’s taking it, really. I sure hope he can handle all the pressure once he steps on the pitch …

Media mogul uses excessive hype. Shock. What next? Pato’s agent angling for a better deal or a move to Madrid? Must admit that Leonardo must have some great contacts back home in Brazil because the guys he is bringing to the San Siro are just awesome.

Hey, Roberto, not shame on Inter they don’t let him go — give them a couple weeks before piling on the scorn!
