Ok, So It’s Not a Sex Scandal …

But, since beggars can’t be choosers, this is going to have to do for the moment: Badass Atalanta striker Riccardo Zampagna is facing drunk driving (or, as you Brits would say, “drink driving”) charges in Bergamo after driving into a woman riding a moped in the wee hours of Friday night/Saturday morning.*

According to rampant Italian press reports, Zampagna was on his way home from a party (Organized by a group of Atlanta ultras who will now get tshirts printed that say “We party so hard, we got a striker arrested!“) at about 2am when his Audi clipped a moped driven by a 30-year-old Bolivian (apparently that’s relevant, because it’s in every report) woman. Because he’s a good guy even when he’s drunk, Zampagna reportedly stopped immediately to help his victim; happily for both of them — as well as for those of us who want to report the story without feeling really bad — the woman suffered only minor bumps and bruises and is totally fine now, though perhaps not much of a Zampagna fan anymore.

Her recovery won’t protect the striker from the law, though, and the fact that Zampagna failed a breathalyser test at the scene has him in trouble: His license has been suspended, and he’s currently waiting to see if either The Man or his club will punish him further for the incident.

*I think we own Zampagna a formal thank you for trying to fill the void being left by his former teammate Bobo Vieri’s apparent decent into domestic bliss (thanks to Julie for that info and link). If one (until recently) Atlanta man won’t create a scandal for us, it’s nice that Zampanga is man enough to step up and make something happen, even if it’s only by hitting a woman with his car.
