A Couple Slightly Massive Games For Our Viewing Pleasure
By: Martha | September 28th, 2007
First and most importantly, we have the proverbial top-of-the-table clash between Inter, AKA The Team Without Any Defenders, and Roma, AKA The Team That Plays the Pretty Football. Totti is back for Roma, though Alberto Aquilani is unlikely to figure, which is a small mercy for Inter. Inter, meanwhile, are falling apart at the seams: Despite hopeful muttering in the press, Crisitian Chivu isn’t even fit for the bench, Matrix is still broken, Nelson Rivas is out for a month with heart problems (!), Maicon is still suspended and, oh yeah, Zlatan and Crespo are both “unwell,” whatever that means. If by “unwell” they mean crazy, that’s never been a problem for Zlatan before. If it means they’re hurt, though, the game could get really, really ugly. [Channel 4 has their usual preview here, and Marco’s got a nice post up on the history of the Inter-Roma rivalry. And, if what you’re looking for is a very smart preview drowning in vitriol, Chris can hook you up.]
Up north, meanwhile, there’s the little matter of the first Turin derby in four years, “hosted” by Torino. In incredibly bad news for Toro, Gigi Buffon is back in training after leaving the midweek match with an injury, and has been declared fit to start Sunday. Doh! Despite their loss to Udinese and struggles to play the football supporters expect, Juve had had a great start on paper and are scoring goals in bunches, while Toro had been busy grinding out draws until Wednesday’s loss to Parma. Despite Eugenio Corini’s best efforts to get his team fired up and appropriately angry, their problems finding the back of the net combined with Buffon’s return to the Juve goal could add up to a long evening for the home side. That said, I hope I’m terribly wrong and that it ends 2-0 Torino, with a bit of brilliance from Recoba and a 30-yard free kick from Corini. [Keep an eye on the Juve blog for reaction and, just maybe, a nice biased preview; Channel 4’s take is up already.]

“And, if what you’re looking for is a very smart preview drowning in vitriol, Chris can hook you up.”
I’m utterly offended, even if it is 100% true.

If it was dumb vitriol, then I’d believe you were offended.

Vitriol? Is that the word I was looking for? And I was just thinking it was uber-seriousness or single mindedness. Hmmm…
And is that Totti on his knees at the feet of Materazzi?

That photo is great. It really does look like Totti has joined a new cult and is performing the 4th Position of the Undying Salvation. Or, something.

Totti looks like a wrestler awaiting the Matrix’s finishing move.
That said, assuming the Cubs clinch tonight or tomorrow, a Roma trouncing of Inter will get the sports weekend off to a great start.

Shouldn’t the sports have gotten off to a start worthy of celebration on Wednesday when Rex was benched?
And I missed that picture. I remember that play, it was when Matrix put his knee up Totti’s ass. Which is why the pic looks like the Matrix just put his knee up Totti’s ass.

Cubs suck. I’m glad they made the playoffs, so I can watch them lose
Cardinals, Italia Champs 2006

Kevin! My man! I forgot that you were an STL guy. Too bad about the epic sucking this year, but we’ve got buckets of playoff appearances and titles over the last 100 years. Suck it, Cubs.

Sorry Juve fans no preview, but martha rest assured they’ll be one hell of a biased reaction. Thanks for the shout out.

Martha and Kevin:
Bite me! I’ve been going to Wrigley since I was 10 as it was down the block from my dad’s shop. I’d wake up at 5am and sleep until 9. My dad put me to work sweeping floors, cleaning the bathroom and stripping couches around 1. I’d walk five blocks down to Wrigley and catch a 1:20 game. Had to cut more than a few games short to get back by 4.
My best friend is a Cardinals fan. I was there in ‘04 when Suppan outdueled Clemens in Game 7 of the NLCS. I wore Cardinal red and screamed my freaking head off. Also saw the last game at old Busch when they lost to Fat Lance and the rest of the Asstrolls.
phhhhhhhhhttttt…
Totti and Matrix look like a great comedy duo.
