Ah, Finally: A Big, Foreign Quagliarella Bid! (Also: Corini to Roma?)

By: Martha | June 14th, 2007

Big QuagsThe same day we’re told Fabio Quagliarella would rather “prove himself” at Sampdoria than flee for greener pastures the moment he and scores a brace for the Azzurri, the British press revealed that a £10 million bid for the striker is in the works at Manchester United. Man alive. Well, whether there’s any truth to this rumor or not, it’s given at the very least a ring of plausibility by the recent loss of Louis Saha to surgery and United’s resulting fears they’ll be thin in attack when the new season kicks off in August. Also, the reported amount is at the lower edge of the price range Sampdoria set in the minutes after Quagliarella’s goals for Italy, so it’s not an offer they’d reject out of hand.

That said, the striker is co-owned by Udinese, a status which would complicate any foreign transfer and therefore makes the talk of a move to Roma perhaps more likely (if he’s going anywhere). As you can read in Chris’ regular updates, word on the street is that Roma would buy only Samp’s half of Quagliarella, offering Mirko Vucinic, U21 Azzurrini goalkeeper Gianluca Curci and an undermined amount of cash in exchange.

Or, alternately, instead of bringing in a young scorer, Roma could stick an aging stud in their midfield, in the form of Eugenio Corini. Yes, that rumor is back again, this time from the mouth of the man himself, who told an Italian radio station today that he’s received “one proposal that fills up to me of pride” from the capital club.* He doesn’t provide any specifics of the offer, though, and isn’t leaping into Giallorossi arms just yet — he’ll spend the next little while sorting though the massive pile of offers on his table and work out which one is best; at that point we’ll see what actually happens. (I still love Corini, but I still don’t get how he’d fit in at Roma. I would love nthing more than to be wrong, though, and to spend next season watching him kick ass and take names in one of those weird, skin-tight jerseys from the future.)

I doubt the Fab Quag’s to ManU rumors have legs due to his stated desires for next year:

    #1: Starting spot.
    #2: Starting spot.
    #3: Starting spot.
    #748: Starting spot.

By the way, rumor is Corini was offered a very substantial contract. I just wish I had the power to appoint him a front-office position when he decides to call it a career. I’ve always respected his decision making and Lord knows Roma doesn’t have a collective brain making the important decisions at the moment. I love Totti but he’s currently their transaction consultant. D’oh!

While I don’t either think or want Quags to go to Man U, I feel the need to remind you of how well the Suazo “starting spot” rationale worked. (:

Corini is a god, agreed. It’ll just make me sad if he goes to Roma because of the prestige and ends up realizing too late he’d rather be playing for a small team than sitting on the bench for Roma.

(And the thought of Totti making Important Decisions makes me feel a little bit sick. Seriously? He holds THAT position? What ad wizard came up with that brilliant plean?)

    Hey, gloves up.

But Suazo is 28 and Fab Quag’s 23. This is Suazo’s big chance for that life-changing pay day (he was making 600,000 at Cagliari), while if FG has a year similar to last year - he’ll be handed a blank check and told “whatever your heart desires.” Also, FG is Italian and I doubt that doesn’t factor in quite a bit.

I’m also not so sure Corini would get as much bench time as you think. If Pizarro goes, likely the case now, he’d switch off with Aquilani, but both could play when they switch to a 3-2-3-2. I’d expect at least 20 starts in Serie A. I’m also salivating at the thought of Corini molding Aquilani as a player.

With Rosella Sensi in charge I think we’re lucky she didn’t appoint her manicurist as a consultant. Her decision making can rival Paris Hilton’s at times.

(I knew you’d pull out the age card. Damn you and your cold, hard rationality.)

Shit, 20 starts?! if Corini got 20 starts I’d be over the goddamn moon to see him at Roma. And the fans would surely adore him — it’d be a fantastic place for him to end his career. (And, maybe, get a manicure or two on the cheap.)

Let me know if you hear anything through your Roma Channels; Lisa and I will keep an eye on the word out of Palermo. We can triangulate rumors.

Chris just said what I was wondering about regarding Corini going to Roma-Pizarro out, and Corini switching off with Aquilani and mentoring him a bit. If that’s the plan, I hope Corini takes up Roma’s offer. (And then I hope Roma do good things in both Serie A and the Champions League so Corini can quietly snicker in Zamparini’s general direction.)
