Add Rosicky to Inter’s Wish List. Allegedly.
By: Martha | April 2nd, 2007
This story appeared at the end of last week and has slowly spread to a whole bunch of different outlets, though it’s hard to tell if its pervasiveness is proof it’s legit or simply a sign that everyone is using the same, totally unreliable tabloid source. According to News of the World (sigh), someone “close to Inter owner Massimo Moratti” has confirmed the club’s interest in Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky, as well as their intention to make a £14 million bid for the midfielder, ostensibly in order to replace Figo on the roster (yes, he’s another one of those).
Taking a huge leap of faith and assuming there’s some truth in the rumor, it’s an interesting one to consider. Despite his recent trouble with that whole hookers-in-Czech-camp thing, Rosicky has been appearing regularly for Arsenal this season — though he’s not scoring as much as they might have liked — and there’s no reason to expect they’d want to sell him. That said, however, he cost them only £6.8 million when they bought him from Borussia Dortmund over the summer, and the chance to more than double their investment has got to give the money men at Arsenal pause. Plus, while Rosicky’s only 26 and seemingly still at the height of his powers, Arsenal’s knacking for buying 16-year-olds who blow doors off the Premiership suggests his loss wouldn’t exactly decimate their midfield.
The secret Inter fan inside me finds thought of Rosicky playing alongside Stankovic awfully exciting, so I’m hoping this turns out to be at least semi-true. At the very least, it’s a good story with an air of plausibility to it, which puts it ahead of at least 50% of the transfer rumors floating around in the press (and, yes, here).
