Figo to MLS Again — But to the Wrong Damn Team

Last week I mentioned the ever-present rumor about my beloved Figo possibly heading to MLS, assuming it was just more empty transfer blathering. But now that the so-called Beckham Rule has been passed by the MLS powers that be, that story seems to be turning from idle fantasy (ahem) into an actual possibility.
While neither Figo nor anyone at Inter has said anything recently to encourage the Figo-to-America stories, his name remains one of three (along with Beckham and Ronaldo) that is consistently mentioned when the new rule is discussed. Unfortunately, however, the latest mutterings seem to have Ronaldo on the verge of signing with the NY Red Bulls, with Figo possibly in talks with Chivas USA. Chivas USA?! What does this do for me? Perhaps the people at MLS misunderstood, but the only circumstance under which it’s acceptable for Figo to sully himself by playing in MLS is if he’s a Red Bull, and therefore available at the Meadowlands for my personal viewing pleasure. Chivas? Totally unacceptable. That is all.

If Figo comes to the MLS , it will provably be when he’s about to retire, that’s still a long time to come cuase he’s one of the greatest, so don’t count on him to come to the MLS soon.

Luis, that is SO not true!
He also has a great physique. :-)
Not to mention the ability to put butts in seats and market truckloads of stuff to young fans, which MLS needs far more than skills right now.

So true, Laurie. When Real Madrid was in the US this summer, all of the excitement was for Becks–MLS must have been salivating knowing that Becks wants to play in the league.

Louise, I got to be at the Seattle Real Madrid-DC United game in August. It was incredible! They sold out Seahawks stadium. 67,000 or so. Pretty amazing to see all those people there to watch soccer in the US. Imagine what Beckham, Ronaldo and Figo together could do to attendance!

The thought of Beckham coming actually sort of pisses me off, just because of the unstoppable hype engine that will no doubt go into overdrive the moment he and his hair hit these shores. But for Figo, I’ll even stomach the Beckham nonsense, as well as his hideous, skeletal wife.

Y’know, Martha, I used to feel that way too. Then I was watching World Cup and saw Beckham ralph on the field. Then I watched him cry about the team. And next thing I know my brain’s going all fuzzy and maternal and I want to make things All Better.
All of a sudden (it’s ugly, sad, illogical, but true) I like Beckham. He needs to be in MLS where I can keep an eye on him.
(Now if we could just get Zizou.)

Looks like your wish is closer than ever to coming true, Laurie. After Becks’ little jaunt to Rome on Friday, Capello is NEVER GOING TO FORGIVE HIM and he’s on his way out of Madrid. It takes talent to be that scary while wearing cardigan sweaters and silly colorful glasses. Cudos, Don Fabio.
