Figo Watch, Day Two, Part Two: The Deed is Done
By: Martha | December 28th, 2006
Just a few hours after assuring myself and all of you that maybe, just maybe, Figo wasn’t going anywhere, it’s now being reported that the deed is done — and, sadly, the words “allegedly” and “anonymous sources” are no longer anywhere to be found. The Portuguese press, which broke the story yesterday, is again leading the way with the news that Figo is actually in Dubai as we speak (in the Burj-Al Arab Hotel, no less!), preparing to sign a six-month contract with Al Ittihad that will make him the highest-paid footballer in the world. The club is set to unveil their blockbuster signing on January 5, but hopefully we’ll get confirmation from someone before then — these pins and needles are killing me.
So, Figo’s choosing £4.2 million for six months — or, if you prefer, about £23,000/day — over sitting on the bench for Inter? Sigh. I want to be mad but it’s sort of hard to blame him: He’s both ending his career (assuming he doesn’t turn up in the US next season) with a HUGE payday and, one imagines, also punishing Inter for not using him enough. Given the player’s combativeness, it’s hard not to think of his decisive performance against Atalanta last weekend as a final “f*ck you” to Mancini. At the very least, you know Figo won’t exactly weep if Inter started to slide down the table in the new year. I’m incredibly sad, but since I don’t have the money to fly to Dubai and convince him to change his mind, I suppose all I can do is wear black and add a Google “Al Ittihad” search to my newsfeeds.

I was going to come here to suggest that this was an elaborate “Day of the Innocents” joke (Dec. 28 is the equivalent to April Fools day in the Spanish speaking world). For instance the reputable Spanish newspaper Marca reported today that there had been a miscount of the votes for FIFA World Player of the Year and Zidane actually beat Canna. They even set a date for the ceremony to re-award it.
But this actually looks real. Sorry, hon. I know how I would feel if it were Canna. :(

Sigh. Thank you, Louise! I actually wrote a post about the Day of the Innocents gag (which must have had you flipping out!), and it didn’t ever occur to me to hope this was in that same vein. Sadly, though, I think it’s real, too. (Did mention the tears and rending of clothing?)

Thanks for your support, Louise.
And I DO like the armband idea — I think I’ll hand them out to everyone I run into today.Posted from
