Wringing Another Picture More Drama From the Figo Situation
By: Martha | February 13th, 2007
Just when we were sure the drama surrounding Luis Figo’s decision to take his game to Saudi Arabia next year was over, he wanders by and stirs the whole thing up again. In an interview from Lisbon yesterday (Lisbon? What the hell is he doing in Lisbon? Doesn’t he have work to do in Milan?), Figo casually mentioned that he’s not sure he’s actually going to Saudia Arabia after all. Say what now?
According to everyone’s favorite grumpy midfielder, while he’s not considering playing in Portugual again when his contract at Inter runs out later this year, his future is a lot more open than we’ve be lead to believe. So open, in fact, that when it comes to Al Ittihad, he’s still “waiting to see if [he goes] or not.” Whoa. One wonders how the people at Al Ittihad feel about this little revelation — I bet it’s news to them.
So, here’s the question: Would he not go because he’s tired and bored and wants to retire? Or could it be that new suitors have emerged? New suitors, say, in the US? One one hand, that’s nothing more than speculation, but on the other it’s a no-brainer that MLS want him — New England, in particular, are eager to sign a high-profile Portuguese player in order to tap into the potential audience presented by the substantial Portuguese population in Massachusetts.
Yes, this is mostly fantasy so far (on oh-so-many levels). But since I’ve got a brand new Red Bulls season ticket in my sweaty little hands, it’s one to which I’ll be clinging for as long as humanly possible. It’s nice here, Luis. I swear it is. And if you happened to find yourself in New York for talks? I can probably find you somewhere to stay. Just so you know.

You naughty girl. (Btw, Luis at World Cup Blog has a Figo picture up on his latest post. I think he did it to impress you.) :-)

Figo reminds me of a girl I once dated. She would always order one thing at a restaurant and then change her mind two minutes later. That and he is about as pretty as she was.
New England and not New York? Interesting…

Anyone that crazy about Figo deserves all the support we Portugal fans can muster. :-)
P.S When Figo arrives for your NY slumber party, can you get me an autograph? By the way, don’t tell him we’re expecting up to 14 inches of snow.

HA! Not a word, Luis, not a word.
(And I’m clearly a fool for reading your last post in NetNewsWire — no pictures in there!)
