Looks Like Matrix Can Give Up On That Dinner Date With Vieira
By: Martha | August 20th, 2007
In an interview so ill-advised you wonder if he’s ever talked to a reporter before or knows about things like “the internet” and “international media,” Patrick Vieira told a French television show over the weekend that he’s not real fond of teammate Marco Materazzi. Well, that’s not entirely true. What he said was “There are those who love him and those who hate him. I will only say that, as far as I am concerned, I will never sit at a dinner table with him.” So I suppose he could be avoiding dinners with Matrix out of fear that his fanboying would embarrass him, but it seems much more likely he’s quite obviously placing himself in the “hate camp.”
Players don’t get along all the time — there’s nothing odd about that, nor about Vieira having issues with a guy he probably thinks terribly disrespect his Les Bleues captain by insulting his sister’s virtue. Or something. But the whole point is that these things stay behind closed doors (no one cared Mancini and Totti weren’t talking until it leaked to the press and became something to explain away; no one outside ever knows Joey Barton isn’t getting along with someone until he tries to put a cigar out in their eye), not out in the world adding to the list of stupid things at which reporters are going to dig. Even if everyone concerned laughs the “controversy” off, it’s just one more issue to distract the team and staff from that whole football thing.
I man, what is Vieira, 45? How could he not know better? (I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he and Mr. Straight Talk Mancini finally sit down to have this one out.)
