Weekend Odds and Ends as We All Laugh at Adriano

•Despite having weeks more time on training than one of the players chosen over him, Adriano was left out of Roberto Mancini’s squad for tomorrow’s Super Cup. Go ahead and laugh, you know you want to.

•Emerson really, really wants to join Milan, because he doesn’t like living under the microscope in Madrid. Aw. Well now I feel bad for the guy.

•Sampdoria fans are going completely mad for Cassano which, really, is appropriate — he’s not had time yet to ruin his relationship with anyone there. He’s chosen to wear #99, both because it’s his prefer number twice (9 and 18 were both taken) and in tribute to his “friend” Ronaldo. That’s nice — apparently while everyone else was hating them, they stuck together at Real. (Oh, and then he went and scored twice in a training match this afternoon, which means he’s now the Messiah.)

•Stop press, Marco Materazzi had admitted calling Zinedine Zidane’s sister a slut right before he was headbutted in the World Cup final. Let this be a lesson to you, wordsmiths: If you call someone’s female relative a “slut” or a “whore” in any language in a FIFA match, even if they retaliate violently, you could be facing a two-game suspension. Watch yourselves.

•Because of the murder that occurred during the last Serie A game between the two teams, police are considering banning Milan fans from the team’s opening match at Genoa next weekend. A Genoa supporter was stabbed in violence between groups of fans in January 1995, a death which led to the game being called off and also has caused massive tension between the supporters, particularly since Genoa went down that summer and haven’t faced Milan since.
