Fiorentina v Roma: Holy Mother of God
By: Martha | September 26th, 2007
Two sure signs Raymond Domenech is insane: 1)Philippe Mexes doesn’t have a regular spot in the French national team, and 2)Sebastian Frey is currently FOURTH on their goalkeeping depth chart.
Moving on. Holy shit, what a game — I don’t know about you people, but my heart is still pounding. Despite the periodic flurries of giveaways in the midfield, the skill on display between those two teams was enough to take your breath away, particularly among the young Italians like Aquilani (who came on and was immediately involved in a goal) and Montolivo, whose intelligence and poise is just completely ridiculous.
Fiorentina started like a proverbial house afire, and Roma didn’t even have their first spell of sustained possession until the 12th minute. The Viola failed to capitalize on their presence around the Roma box, though (the story of the half), and the capital club were totally in their element from then on, busting the Fiorentina offside trap enough times to give Cesare Prandelli several heart attacks. Both Roma goals came off counters, but the second was particularly gorgeous: It came right on the heel of Fiorentina’s best (and totally squandered) period wherein they had three or four fantastic, close-range chances within just a few minutes and, just to add insult to all the misses, the flurry of shots ended with Giuly driving the ball into the net on the other end of the of the pitch.
The Viola looked understandably demoralized after Guily’s goal, but they apparently devoted halftime firing themselves up, and came out with an additional attacker and good possession, though they still didn’t force many saves out of Doni. Mutu had about a zillion good chances, while Pazzini had the ball a lot but failed to make much use of it in the box — we’ll see what FiorentinaGianni says, but I found him pretty disappointing today.
I’m terribly biased, obviously, but I daresay thing changed for Fiorentina when Christian Veiri came on with about 20 minutes to play. As opposed to the club’s other attacking players, he doesn’t do anything complicated and is slow as molasses, but he keeps the ball, gets forward, and plays people into position to make things happen. And, what do you know — it works! He won the PK with which Mutu tied the game (dirty, dirty chip from little Better-Than-Totti) and nearly put the Romanian through for the winner a few minutes later. At the other end, Frey was working his usual magic, making a series of fantastic saves which won the Viola their precious point.
Seemed like a fair result for both sides to me, but I daresay RomaChris will think differently when his report goes up later.

Neh, it was fair, but it doesn’t mean Roma shouldn’t have won that game. Goddamn David Pizarro….

Oh, and your boy Mutu is a dirty bitch (I really wanted to pull a Zamparini here) - that elbow was completely uncalled for.

Yeah, he was pretty dick-y today, though I’m not convinced it’s a gypsy thing. He also needs to stop all the yapping and just play. (That said, Mexes was a bit bitchy himself.)

Also, is it me, or does Frey look more The Dude than superstud goalkeeper? I always expect him to be more adept at clearing the chamber than making grown strikers cry.

What he looks like to me is Russell Crowe playing the dude — he has that weird, beefy face thing going on, combined with the look of a guy who owns a dozen bongs.

Frey was awesome again, and I continue to be worried about Fiorentina’s defense. From fewest goals conceded in Serie A to conceding 6 through 5 games this year is not a good trend.
That being said, it is impressive to fight back twice against a side the quality of Roma, even if they were not at full strength.
Frey and Mexes showed once again the lack of quality of coaching for the French National team. Frey has exactly one major flaw as a goalie and that is that he’s relatively short. Mancini took advantage of that to perfection with that sublime chip for the opening goal.
And I must say that I was impressed with Bobo today. He was great at holding up the ball and distributing. However the penalty showed his lack of pace. In his prime that would have been one touch and in the back of the net before the slide tackle even arrived. He still did well to win the penalty.
And how long until Donadoni gives Montolivo a chance in the center of the park? Italy looks good for the future with a combination of Aquliani, De Rossi and Montolivo in the center of midfield.

From the lyrics of a famous Musician…
ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!
Inter Steam Rolled Samp and goes into a tie atop the table. Ibra scores 2 and FFFIIIIIIII-GO scores!!!! Roma drops points to them finally in very good match with the Viola. The Rosshitnero lost and Miccoli deserves his choice of 3 WAG’s and any amount of $$ he wants for putting the nail in their coffin. It would have been better had Juve lost, but that wasn’t likely.
FYI Frey looks like a fatter version of Kurt Cobain… That’s how Cobain might have looked SANS Drugs… that’s just my take on it.

what a great game. The young fiorentina side really has some skill to build on, huh? But IMO despite looking like they were playing a man up all day, fiorentina looked the weaker team. ANd Roma played without Totti, Perrotta, Juan and Cassetti and didnt bring Aquilani on till late in the 1st.
but the Viola looked dominant for much of the game. it was strange. they looked the better team but you could tell the roman side was going to win. I think its the poor floerintine defense on display.
Great for Serie A to have these two teams playing at such a high level!!!

Well, Martha since you have forgetton or somthing but Thuram and Gallas are pretty good defenders if I don’t say so myself so I can see why Mexes is not first. Escude is not bad either. As for Frey, Coupet is a great goalkeeper as well but for sure Frey should be higher up then Landreau even if I am speaking with my Serie A tinted specs on.

Raymond Domenech does alot of things wrong, those are two of many. Gallas is better as a left back, while Thuram is just old, he wants out but still gets called up. Frey should be second choice definately, and how Jeremy Toulalan is still second best to Claude Makelele is another mystery.

Corey: Abidal is great at left back already and besides Gallas has already moaned enough times that he only wants to play centreback. Thuram is old but still a great defender.

Wait, we need more signs Ray Domenech is insane?

While the whole “gay” thing is more than a little lame, the new Frey chant combined with their response to the arrival of Bobo makes me quite fond of the Viola fans.

Well political correctness isn’t their forte, but that is also true for many of the ultras all over Italy, and possibly the world.
Although I am extremely biased, I think it’s safe to state that the rest of Italy acknowledges the uniqueness of Tuscan humour. The reaction to the arrival of Bobone is I think one fine example. Maybe only Roma fans, however we as Viola may dislike them, have a similar taste for this kind of humourous chants.Posted from
