Canna Calling Juve? Please.

Yes, ladies, I’m always just this greasy. There’s a short (albeit picture-filled, which is nice) interview with Fabio Cannavaro in La Gazzetta today — only a single paragraph of which is online — and, after reading it, the people at Channel 4 decided the gist of the story was “Cannavaro calls Juve.” As a result, they struggled manfully throughout their write-up to make it sound as if Canna was desperate to come home, despite being unable to find quotes to that effect. (How a guy saying things like “I love being in Spain. Madrid is beautiful, Real is the most important club in the world and I have won La Liga” can be construed as a desperate plea for an Italy return is beyond me.)

The International Herald Tribune, meanwhile (what you might call a fairly reliable source that couldn’t care less where Canna goes), led their story with this headline: “Cannavaro unlikely to leave Real Madrid for return to Juventus.” And, yes, both these stories are based on exactly the same interview, and feature essentially the same series of quotes, translated almost identically. Canna does say that he loves Juve and offers the old, reliable “I could never rule out a return” line, but beyond that there’s not a sign of interest in coming home.

So, basically, it comes to this: Yes, Juve are overhauling their backline. Yes, Canna is a defender. Beyond that, though, there’s nothing to this story. Realistically speaking, Italy captain or not, why would Juve invest in a 33-year-old defender who costs a mint when they’re trying like hell to bring in enough youth to surive once the old folk they just resigned are gone? What’s really interesting in the article is that Canna dares criticize Francesco Totti for his endless hemming and hawing about his Italy return (or not). Why doesn’t someone take that bit of the story and run with it? It’s be morbidly entertaining to see that one blow up into a huge, useless battle of egos.

Ady, what a terrible thing to suggest! Or, rather a perfect thing to suggest that's just too cruel to implement. (That said the possible transitive implication that the nipples are shield because they're ugly rather than inappropriate is sort of awesome.)

Yes I second Muddia's motion. The whole WAG thing was created because you post those small pics you women love soo much, was it not? We need a double header WAG week!!

As for Canna. Real Said they don't need his services Juve don't really want him back. Newcastle is supposedly prepping a bid for him. They also want Barzagli.

How strange will it be if in his last game for the Azzurri, he was subbed off and in his place came Daniele De Rossi. His replacement for both #10 shirts. When no one thought he would retire.

Creepy.

But I will say, I'd love to see Totti sit out the qualifiers and come back for Euro 2008 in order to give him an extra year with Roma. Donadoni may not like it, but what's he going to do? In his words, Totti is the best Italian in the world.

Martha, the use of that photo (though I will say you showed some restraint in cropping it down to only Canna) calls for a ridiculous WAG this week. It is necessary. Might want to start work on it a little early.

And I think it's likely, too, Chris. I've been saying all along this is very much like what happened when Alan Shearer retired from the English national team -- his domestic form went nuts, and people were falling all over themselves begging him to come back. He didn't, because his domestic form was at least partially due to the rest he was getting by not going to national camp all the damn time. Same thing happened with Totti during his 9 months off -- the rest is crucial to the older guys, and if he rejoins the Azzurri, his Roma form will suffer. It'll be too bad if he hangs them up, but I'll totally understand.

It's probably not being mentioned because the whole Totti-Azzurri thing is overblown as it is. It's not like this is a club team where they need to go out and buy reinforcements for the squad, and we aren't even close to the Don Doni naming the squad. Everybody's just learning what Mancini did recently, this is Totti's world and you're just living in it.

Much ado about nothin, as far as I'm concerned. Although it might be something when he announces he's not coming back - which is looking very possible and maybe even likely.

I'm with Julie. How lovely to wake up to an oiled up Canna. Not sure who it was who was claiming that you posted tons of undressed men here, but Adriano and Ronaldo simply don't count - they're scary, not pretty. Cannavaro will always count.

On a more serious note, Cannavaro was pretty upset over calciopoly and the loss of the scudetti. I'm not sure why he would consider a move back to Juve.

And back to lighter again - I came across a picture from that scene where Juve and Roma were playing and Canna is boinking Totti's nose and grinning. That would be perfect for a feud post.
