Week 10: Who Needs Totti?
By: Martha | November 1st, 2007
Finally getting a chance to play in the absence of Er Pupone, Mirko Vucinic cannot be stopped — he scored Roma’s first goal in their derby victory yesterday, and spectacularly assisted on their second. Totti? Totti who? (Interestingly, Lazio’s Cristian Ledesma, who never, ever scores, can’t stop with the fantastic goals in derby matches. Sadly for him, not enough teammates joined in this time.)
Despite the wild frenzy that comes from a derby win, nothing changed in the table for Roma, because everyone else in the top four also won. They’re still three back of Genoa-killers Inter, and remain one point clear of both Juve, who rode a David Trezeguet hat trick to victory over Empoli, and Fiorentina, who battled their way to a great win over Napoli at home. Elsewhere, the other cool kids showed Milan the Big Club Secret Handshake again last night after another completely unexpected goal explosion, this time over Sampdoria, who started the day a point ahead of Milan in the table. The schizophrenic Rossoneri scored five AGAIN, and even little Yoann Gourcuff got into the act. Gather round, kids, to see which Milan team will show up this weekend to face the overwhelming power of Engenio Corini and his maroon-clad friends.
At the other end of the table, there was much rejoicing in Livorno: A win! Praise the Lord, a win! They beat fellow strugglers Reggina 3-1, three points that drew them level with their opponents on five and actually moved them above Reggina on goal difference. Woo hoo! Oh, and the three points also cost Reggina coach Massimo Ficcadenti his job. (More on that later.) The other two teams closest to the foot of the table are Empoli, who can’t beat anyone but Milan, and Siena, who are probably better than their eight points show but are nevertheless very much in the danger zone.
Full results, top of the table after the jump.
Atalanta - Cagliari 2-2
Fiorentina - Napoli 1-0
Inter - Genoa 4-1
Juventus - Empoli 3-0: Hat trick for Trezeguet. For those of you keeping track, that’s 10 goals in 10 matches, without a single penalty. How much do you want to bet he still don’t get into the France squad?
Palermo - Parma 1-1
Reggina - Livorno 1-3
Roma - Lazio 3-2
Sampdoria - Milan 0-5: Utter domination. Who are these guys?
Siena - Catania 1-1
Udinese - Torino 2-1: DAMMIT.

Ledesma was really impressive, especially for a guy who was supposed to be hurt and out of the game. Luckily for you, he’s just stamping his transfer to Inter next summer. Unluckily for us, Inter could actually use him. Wait, scratch that. Moratti would never buy a guy who Inter either needs or would fit the system, because there is no system.

Funny you mention the lack of a system: Nico Burdisso made his return yesterday. As a wide midfielder. Inter do seem to like ex-Lazio midfielders. Stankovic has worked out ok and Jimenez does great on the bench; maybe Moratti will just buy Ledesma out of a Lazio habit?
