Video of the Week: Italian Goalkeepers Scoring Goals
By: Francesco | September 18th, 2008Usually when we think of goalkeeper’s scoring goals, we think of those keepers that take free kicks and penalties for their club, past and present (Jose Luis Chilavert, Rogerio Ceni, Hans-Jorg Butt), but there are always the goalkeepers that come up in the last minute of the game with their team down by a goal and get a touch on the ball and score themselves. We don’t see this often in Italian calcio, but there have been instances where goalkeepers have scored goals. Videos after the jump:
Toldo vs. Juventus
Inter were down by a goal and Toldo came into the box for the corner. The ball was whipped in, there were lots of confusion and Toldo seemed to get a knee on the ball and put it past Buffon.
Marco Amelia vs. Partizan Belgrade
Livorno were losing in the UEFA Cup 1-0 to Partizan Belgrade. In the 86th minute Nazionale backup keeper Marco Amelia came forward and got his head onto a Dario Passoni free kick. He was the first Italian goalkeeper to ever score in European play.
Massimo Taibi vs Udinese
English fans will recognize Taibi as a big flop after his time at Manchester United. However Italian calcio fans know that Taibi was one of the most solid keepers in Serie A back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s and most will remember him for his goal. With Reggina losing to Udinese in stoppage time in 2001, Taibi came up for a corner kick and got his head onto the ball, giving the Amaranto the draw. He was the second Italian keeper to score in Serie A.
Michelangelo Rampulla vs. Atalanta
Most (especially Juve fans) will recognize Rampulla’s name because he was the Juventus back-up keeper for most of the 1990’s and early 2000’s and now works with the club. Rampulla was the first goalkeeper ever to score in Serie A. The goal came in 1992 vs. Atalanta while he was playing with Cremonese.
