Champions League: Hear that Jangling? That’s My Nerves.
By: Martha | April 24th, 2007
First of all, of Patrice Evra is injured, I’d hate to see him healthy. Sir Alex is a big liar.
Dida looks like crap, and the Milan backs in general took at least 25 minutes to settle into the game. Against a team like Man U, that’s about 24 minutes too long, because they were cut open terrifyingly easily a couple of times early on (though the goal really seemed no one’s fault but Dida’s, and that of whoever gave it away in the midfield). Luckily for Milan, however, Man U’s defense is even more at sea. Jesus, what a mess they were on that second goal. Also? I’m so glad that chance fell to Kaka. Had Inzaghi been there with only the keeper to beat, he would have somehow endeavored to miss. I’m just saying.
No surprise that Seedorf’s touch let Kaka in for his first goal — the Dutchman seemed the only one who was ready to play from the word go. You know how sometimes you just look at Seedorf and can tell he’s going to do something special? Today feels like one of those day to me — hopefully he’s got a 25-yard rocket or a magical touch in him or something.
In good news, the Milan backs seem to have settled down, but there’s still way too much space between them and the midfield, and Man U are so dangerous in attack (not to mention they’ve got an on-fire Alan Smith sitting on the bench, who surely will come on in the next 45 minutes) that I’m in no way comfortable, even with this lead. Forty-five nice, quiet minutes would do wonders for my heart.

It’s halftime. Feeling better now, Martha? :-)
I adore Patrice Evra beyond all reason, so this is kind of win-win for me, except that I do NOT want to see an all-England final.
Did anybody else think that second goal came out of nowhere. I actually thought it must be a replay until the scoreboard changed. Did that come from a goal kick or what? We never saw the start of the play.
Go, Milan! TWO away goals so far!!

Evra is really good, damn him. He’s another one of those French 12-year-olds, isn’t he?
I don’t feel better yet. I mean, I’m glad the stress is taking a break, but the whole thing just needs to be OVER.
And that goal did come out of nowhere! The cameras entirely missed the build-up, didn’t they?

I am following on Gamecast but went to see the highlights at halftime. Two first half away goals. Nicely done. Now just don’t F it up Milan because cannot take an all-England final.
In a sad note, we lost a great writer of American life in general and the special ways sports can impact it today in David Halberstam. In reading his obit on espn, I fell upon this article he wrote in 2002 on the World Cup and what it means to him. I think he sums up the sport and America’s take on it pretty well while touching on just how important it is to the rest of the world. If you get a chance, it is a nice read.

Thanks for that, Muddia — I’ve read some of Halberstam’s history books as well as the fantastic Summer of ‘49, but had no idea he’d ever written about football. After this stressbucket of a game is over, I’ll definitely go give it a read.

Dida really hurt you guys today - I don’t like to call own-goals on keepers, but he didn’t just bobble that first one - he swatted it backwards. To me, that’s an own-goal, and he was way too far center when Rooney hit that (admittedly very nice) goal at the end. He looked very soft for most of the match.
