Champions League: So Tell Us, Carlo, How Do You Really Feel?

In the wake of by what all accounts was a pathetic capitulation by his team (Little tip: when the first word in a match report is “Howlers,” you know things haven’t gone well.) against Lille last night, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti pretty much lost his shit. After the error-filled 2-0 loss, Ancelotti described the team’s performance as “awful,” and didn’t stop there. “If Milan are what we saw tonight, then it’s total darkness, as we were awful.” Um, damn. That is a man who has, at long last, had enough — and good for him. It’s about time someone stepped up and called Milan on the crap performances they’re turning it. It’s not the officials, it’s not the injuries, and it’s not bad luck: The team is playing like it can’t be bothered, and they deserve to be called on it.*
Of course, no matter how bad they were last night, Milan were already going to go through to the knockout stages, thanks to their great start in the group. So they limp into the next round where they will face Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, Celtic or Porto. According to Ancelotti, the only really dangerous team in that group is Barcelona. Uh huh. All the other teams, meanwhile, are lining up to play Milan. Who ever imagined we’d be saying that?
*For what it’s worth, the fans can’t be bothered either: Despite the fact that tickets were being sold for €1, only 27,067 people turned up at the San Siro to see the match.
