Accidentially Live Blogging the Champions League Draw!
By: Martha | March 9th, 2007
I just happened to notice that the UEFA website is showing the draw live, and it’s about to start. And I’m awake! Clearly, I need to be live blogging this, if only to pass the time.
Ok, so imagine, if you will, a hot woman (there’s always a hot woman) drawing ping-pong balls out of a giant, clear bowl, and handing them to an older football luminary (there’s always an older football luminary) who reads out the teams. Because, clearly, as a hot woman she can’t read. Oh! It’s starting!
•First out of the pot is Milan (represented by a giant “MILAN” flying at me on the screen); they’re matched with Bayern. Crap.
•Third out is PSV, who will be facing … Liverpool. Look out, Holland: The Crouchbot is coming.
•Next in line: Oooooh it’s Roma! Do I want Chelsea, so I can see Mourinho? I don’t think so. And definitely not Man U. Valencia, please. Ah, shit. Man U. Well, those will be great games, if a bit scary. Plus, we’ll get to see Totti and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same field — so much pretty!
•Though it’s quite obvious now that the last pairing is Valencia v Chelsea, they’re insisting on continuing the dramatic, flying words approach. Whoa! Look at that — Chelsea came out of the pot! And then Valencia! Shocking.
Ahem. So, the quarterfinal matches on April 3 and 4 will be:
•Bayern at Milan
•Liverpool at PSV
•Man U at Roma (THAT is going to be awesome)
•Valencia at Chelsea
Now if we can just create some sort of time machine to get us to April already …

I felt pretty sorry for Chelsea and Valencia, actually - way to lose al the thrill and excitement by being drawn last.
Mind you, I suppose there was always the nerve-wracking, nailbiting tension of Which One Would Be The Home Team First?..*grin*
Although Bayern? Eugh. Mind you, least it’s not Roma. Not til the Semis at least. And, thinking on the positive (?) side, we are set up for a rematch of the 2005 final *sobs and tears hair*

Hold on hold on hold on.
They’re ALL going to be on April 3rd?
Fricking nonsense. My service provider is hellbent on denying me a Milan game. OTOH, I will probably get to watch Roma/Man U. Which I am thoroughly looking forward to.
Chelsea-Valencia. Heh. That is either going to be smashingly awesome, or the most mindnumbingly ugly game we’ve seen yet (of course I refer not to David Villa, who is the farthest thing from ugly.)

Good news, roswitha — though the Live Draw! graphics showed them all on the 3rd, the website has regained touch with reality and now says 3rd and 4th. Whew. I’ll go edit the post, too.

Maybe I’m missing something from Milan’s history, but I don’t understand the upset at facing Bayern (other than they might not be entertaining games and Van Bommel and Kahn are a tools). They are NOT GOOD. Beating Real means nothing this year and Real almost took them based on one decent half. I think Milan got off pretty easy considering they could have gotten one of the British teams or Valencia (Roma has a much harder road even with ManU’s current lack of strikers). Maybe the only easier draw would have been PSV.

roswitha, the Milan and PSV games are on the 3rd, while the other two are on 4th. So we don’t have a clash of totty-viewing!

DANG! I have school on both those days!
But I don’t think ESPN would show the Milan game anyway!Posted from

How brilliant are UEFA? Opening Day is Monday the 2nd (Cubbies @ Reds), Tuesday (Awesomeness, ROMA-Man U) is a scheduled off day for rainout possibility. I was afraid the dates would conflict but clearly UEFA consulted Cubs.com before scheduling the matches.
Martha, the Cards do play both the 3rd and 4th, but because Cardinal fans fear the sunlight, they are night games. You are clear.

Louise, I don’t get it either. Last time they played in CL, Milan crushed then, anyway. Any Milan historians care to fill us in?

Muddia, see, in STL they play games at night out of courtesy to the working men and women who can’t afford to skip work but still love their Cardinals. (And yes, the main reason they can’t afford to skip work is because of those $8 beers at Busch. It’s a cruel catch-22.)

They also met in the group stages in 2002-03, with Inzaghi again scoring twice in a 2-1 win in Munich and once in the return which was won by the same score. Milan then went on to win the competition against Juventus in Manchester.
The sides have met once in the Cup Winners Cup, in 1967-68 which the Rossoneri won 2-0 in the first leg and drew 0-0 in the return in Germany. The Rossoneri went on to win the Cup 2-0 against Hamburg in the final where Hamrin scored twice. The Champions Cup meeting was in 1989-90 and Marco Van Basten scored the only goal in the first leg while Milan came through 2-1 in the away return after extra time. The team went on to win the final 1-0 against Benfica in Vienna.

Kahn must have feared Inzaghi so much that he let him scored against him so many times.
