Amauri is Back, Bitches

Rawr. Though he insists he’s not yet operating at full “Yeah!” strength, Amauri is feeling well enough to score a second-half hat trick in Palermo’s final pre-season match yesterday, a 4-2 victory over Real Zaragoza.* Damn.

Granted, Zaragoza were down to 10 men when Amauri went on his rampage (and actually only had nine for his final goal), but still — they’re at the same fitness level as Palermo and clearly were considered a stout test going into the match. If the striker really is still only about 70% healthy after his last winter’s knee injury and subsequent surgery, it’s a little frightening to think about how good he’s going be once he gets his fitness back, not to mention confidence in his knee.

Man alive, Palermo fans must be drooling at the thought of the Brazilian partnered with the newly arrived Fabrizio Miccoli, who has been blowing doors off the competition this preseason with somewhere around 83 goals in the past month or so. Oh, and prepare for the return of the “Please, Amauri, use that Italian passport to play for the Azzurri” discussion.

*Zaragoza’s goals? Both by Ricardo Oliveira. Look out for flying pigs.

Justin said it best. If Amauri is anything like 100% watch out... He single-handedly beat us on our own turf last season. I'm not relishing this at all.

Last time the issue of Amauri on the Azzurri came up, it was still unclear whether he was willing to give up on his dreams of a Brazil call-up or not -- he's got to make that decision before Donadoni can even considering calling him into the team.

I don't know, most of Zamparini's bouts of insanity don't affect the team much, they just make him look bad in the press. Then again, he did let the drama with the coach take up the entire second half of last season...

You're so right, Joe. Even if he doesn't break the team, he'll probably set a linesman on fire and screw everything up.

(Hrishi, I think we all need to ignore that. It's clearly the product of either heavy drug abuse or more wishful reporting in Spain.)

i'd love to see palermo in the Champions League. Won't Zamparini do something to fuck it up though? I mean, how much faith can you have in him? The man is insane. Amauri, Miccoli and Cavani? That's a hell of a front line.

People forget Amauri was the best in Italy before his injury.. With Miccoli, Palermo will be playing Champions League next year.

And I have a hunch that Palermo will be fun to watch this season, as long as Miccoli and Amauri are in form.
