Ancelotti is Gone! (It Must be True, the Papers Say So)

By: Martha | December 12th, 2006

Frightened Carlo.Despite the endless love and votes of confidence being draped all over Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti by Silvio Berlusconi and the non-blackmail paying (just so you know) Adriano Galliani, the Corriere dello Sport this morning features a screaming headline proclaiming Ancelotti leaves!. Since you can’t read this damn paper without paying, all I can see is a jpg of the front page, but they’re damn sure he’s gone at the end of the season. Based on my highly suspicious translation, it sounds like the only chance Ancelotti has to stay is if Milan win the three games they have left before the Christmas break. So, since two of those games are against Fiorentina and high-flying Catania, he very well could be finished by next Saturday night. And, according to Corriere dello Sport, the fixer Milan will bring in next season to magically make the team younger is none other than Marcello Lippi!* (Who, you may recall, is totally not interested in the job. No, really. He’s not.)

Ancelotti’s website, meanwhile, continues to exist as a blissful, happy place where Milan are world-beaters, Calciopoli never happened, and his job is the most secure in Italy. Yes, it was last updated in April.

*Please, someone who speaks Italian, click on the first link and check my translation. It might actually say that Lippi is quitting management entirely for a career in therapeutic massage, so don’t take my word as gospel.

If I understand the Serie A at all, it seems to me that Silvio Berlusconi is like the George Steinbrenner of Italian football. If that is the case, there is no way that Ancelotti survives the holidays.

That being said, I am very excited today because my four-star jersey has shipped from some po-dunk town in West Virginia. However, Martha you may need to talk me down from the ledge here. I am trying my darndest to make Serie A my league of choice (this being the first year I have ever watched the sport at all). But Comcast in Chicago seems to be doing everything possible to force a switch to Premiership by only offering foxsoccerchannel. It is all that is on that channel and the Serie A games they have (aside from Sunday’s derby debacle) are crappy teams at crappy times. All I want for Christmas is GolTV and they will not come through for me. Couple that with the fact that my parents can get it in the burbs and you have one bitter Serie A fan.

The headline means (more or less): ANCELOTTI JUMPS! A Divorce is sure of Milan, but the technicians’s stand will be decisive of the 3 games before christmas. The replacement will Lippi.

Milan’s website has nothing posted with today’s date.

Muddia Dome…. The Italian Serie A is the only way to go for Soccer. Very different from English Soccer which I do pay attention to and watch. Much more tactical and technical. It has a rep for being defensive but is the league that is producing the most goals thus far this season. I know Dish Network carries FSC, GOLTV, and RAI which is a station in Italy which carries the bigger market games. With GOLTV you get a healthy dose of German, Spanish and South American soccer too. Don’t let the Italian game pass you by.

Thanks for the rundown Paolo. My Comcast is also supposed to broadcast RAI International on Sunday mornings for 5 hours or so, usually showing the game-of-the-week. Of course, I don’t get it. I suppose I could ride them until they give in.

I heard that the rumour was Lippi would only go if he got Fernando Torres and Andres Iniesta, which would mean that he’s never going. Barca aren’t going to let go of our little Casper.

Muddia, what Paolo said — there’s nothing like Serie A. I spent many years watch the Premiership, and Italian football is just a different, much more wonderful, animal (imho). I’ve moved twice in the past two years and got Dish Network in both places — if you want to see Serie A, it’s really the only option: In addition to FSC (which only has the rights to the home games of three teams, so apart from the Rome derby, you don’t get to see big games), GolTV and RAI Int’l, they’ve also recently added ESPN Deportes, which means much wider Champions League coverage.

Granted, the dish is an eyesore and it’s not cheap, but once you take the plunge you won’t believe you survived for so long without it.
