As expected, Italy doesn’t get Euro 2016
By: Francesco | May 28th, 2010
After missing out on Euro 2012, the FIGC decided to put in a bid for Euro 2016, the first European Championship that will have 24 teams instead of the usual 16. The bid included new stadiums in many cities across Italy (and some simply being renovated) and many saw Italy hosting Euro 2016 as the only way we’d see some new stadiums around the peninsula. However, when the bid was submitted weeks ago, many media outlets reported that Italy’s bid was largely unimpressive compared to the bids of their competitors Turkey and France and there was a very slim chance that Italy would be hosting it’s first major tournament since Italia ‘90. Well, that was confirmed today in Geneva at the conference held for UEFA’s assignment of the tournament. Italy were represented by FIGC head Giancarlo Abete and ambassador Paolo Maldini. However, the Italian bid must have really stunk, because it was eliminated right away. France received 7 votes and Turkey 6, meaning Les Blues will play at home in 2016. Italy fails in yet another major tournament bid. But it’s ok, we like seeing our clubs play in stadiums built in the 1920’s. Right?
