As the Sheva Turns
By: Martha | November 30th, 2006
Yes, friends, it’s that time again — time for your daily update on the endless Sheva soap opera. When last we met, life was hell in England and his on-loan arrival in Italy was eagerly await by people in both countries. Now, however, the tunes have changed. First of all, it seems as if that one-non-EU-player-per-season rule that we originally thought applied only to purchases might also include loans. In which case, the dream of Sheva’s triumphant Milan return is pretty much dead in the water.
BUT! This is Italy, so there is always a loophole. In this case, Milan would simply have to lean on a club that hasn’t yet signed a non-EU player, get them to bring Sheva over, and then buy him from them. See, you actually can sign more than one non-EU player, it’s just that only one of the players can come from a team outside Italy. This way, Sheva would be coming from, like, Catania, so there’s no problem. Brilliant! So he’s coming!
Ah, but not so fast, grasshopper. It seems that his former Milan teammates not all be entirely on-board with this whole plan. In fact, if Google Translate can be trusted, none other than Paolo Maldini (who, much like The Pope, is totally infallible) and Gennaro Gattuso oppose his return. And even if Seedorf and Kaladze do want him back, who would go against Maldini’s wishes? Come on. Plus, according to La Gazzatta Della Sport, Supremo Galliani says they’re not even talking to Chelsea. (It’s unclear if this is because Mourinho is busy planning his next effortless manipulation of poor Alex Ferguson’s emotions, or because they actually don’t want Sheva out.) He does, however, go to great lengths to let us know that negotiations are definitely possible.
Whew. Got all that? Good. Now forget it, since the story will have changed entirely by the end of the day.
