Barca Unload Giuly on Roma
By: Martha | July 17th, 2007
Barcelona have been working all summer to get rid of Ludovic Giuly. It’s not that he’s not been a useful player for them since arriving from Monaco three years ago, but he’s now 31, has a high salary, and is being seen as surplus to requirements in the face of Barca’s mass of summer signings.
At first, he was going to (maybe) be part of the Cristian Chivu deal but, after that fell through, Monaco were seen as his most likely destination with Marseille also in the mix. Now, though, it appears the Roma thing is going to happen after all, albeit in a cash-only, Romanian-free deal.
Like everyone else, Roma were unwilling to meet Barca’s inflated price demands but, after lightning-fast negotiations, it’s being reported they’re paying €3.2 million for Giuly, who will sign a three year deal worth €2 million/season, plus unspecified bonuses. This is a pay cut for the teeny tiny, impressively versatile attacker, but since it’s seemingly his best shot to play even semi-regularly (I’m sure Chris will rant about this a bit over at the Roma blog later today), it’s easy to see why he urged Barca to make the move. Giuly is already in Rome (arriving at 1am this morning, the eager beaver) and, after signing his contract today, seems likely to go right to training — as Il Romanista said, the Frenchman “wants to throw itself in this new adventure.”
Roma, meanwhile, are doubtless thrilled to finally have someone on their books nicknamed The Atomic Goblin. Can I get that on a tshirt?
