Benitez Set to Do a Little Shopping in Italy, Come Summer
By: Martha | February 20th, 2007
According to a wildly ill-advised interview he gave the Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool manager Raffa Benitez appears to be bent on replacing virtually his entire first team with players currently plying their trade in Serie A. I exaggerate slightly, but in addition to the ubiquitous David Trezeguet, Benitez also has his eye on Vincenzo Iaquinta, Amauri and Juve’s Valeri Bojinov. It’s unclear whether the reporter just said something like “Quick, name stikers in Serie A!” and then pasted the Liverpool gaffer’s answers into his story where they seemed most interesting, or if Benitez actually said he was tracking all of these players, but it’s a safe bet that a denial in some form will be out within 24 hours.
Jaded mutterings aside, however, Liverpool do need strikers, what with Craig Bellamy shooting himself in the foot at yet another club, and Peter Crouch being too tall to talk with properly. Combine that with the buckets of American dollars currently winging their way to Anfield, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the ‘Pool make a Shock!Bid for someone like Amauri over the summer.
