Catching Up, Or: So Much News, So Little Time!

Kaka loves him some water sports.• You may not have heard, but Kaka is now Italian. This is good for Milan because it means he’s no longer and non-EU player, and good for Kaka because the “Welcome to your new life as an Italian” gift basket includes some killer wines and dried meats.

• Despite the best efforts (Read: Whining and begging) of their chairman, Livorno’s UEFA Cup clash with Espanyol will be played behind closed doors today. While it’s undeniably sad that a small club is playing a European match its fans can’t see, it’s nevertheless extremely reassuring that the rules are actually still being enforced — maybe things really are changing.

• In an effort to get panicked Al Ittihad to stop calling, Luis Figo’s agent assured the press yesterday that his client will most definitely join the Gulf club on July 1, as his contract states. While his pleas with Figo to shut the hell up went unreported, I think we can safely assumed they were issued at about the same time.

• The Italian press are reporting that defender Jonathan Zebina (who, you may recall, is not so happy at Juve) has agreed to join Milan at the end of the season — that despite a contract with the Old Lady that runs through summer 2009. There’s no word on the conditions of the deal, but one hopes Milan aren’t eying Zebina because he’s “young” by their demented frame of reference. Granted, he’s an infant compared to Billy Costacurta, but the Juve man is 28 years old — that ain’t young for a footballer anywhere but Milan.

• This just in from the Inter website: Adriano and Maicon devoted their afternoon yesterday to “three hours of black-and-blue passion.” Wow. I’m not really sure I want this much detail on anyone’s personal life.

Every time I read about a Milan defender, I think about the quote that said they wanted Mexes on the team to “rejuvenate an aging rearguard.”

(I always thought that required the services of a plastic surgeon.)
