Champions League: Post-Mortem Whining from Sir Alex
By: Martha | May 3rd, 2007
Though he did manage to acknowledge — through clenched teeth, one assumes — Milan’s superiority last night, Sir Alex Ferguson also squeezed whining about the officiating, the domestic schedule, and how tired his players were into his post-match comments. It’s never surprising to hear him bitching, but after a dismantling like that, sometimes it seems best to just shut up and take it with some class (particularly when you’ve been all over certain other managers about their lack of class).
The unkindest cut of all, though, was directed at his own team (no, not his assertion that Man U “cut its own throat” by allowing those early goals): Sir Alex went to the press and described poor Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance as “disappointing.” OUCH. I mean, it was, but still — that’s cold. Do you say that sort of thing in the press? Someone better go check and make sure The Pretty One’s not either offed himself or at the very least keyed the gaffer’s car.
For their part, as you might expect, the folks in the other camp were mildly fired up — you know things are good in Milan when dry, circumspect Carlo Ancelotti solemnly describes his team’s performance in the first half as “perfect football.” Amongst the players, Gattuso and Gila marveled at Milan’s success, while Kaka, typically, took the post-game press conference as an opportunity to detail the ways in which he needs to improve his game. Coming from anyone else that sort of thing would sound like so much false modesty, but from Kaka? It rings entirely true, oddly enough.
Also, in case you were wondering about player ratings, The Sun gave both Kaka and the magnificent Seedorf nines. And really, that’s all that matters.

Hehehe…I’ve been snickering at SAF since I got up. Complaining about the scheduling is pretty funny, considering he brushed off Jose when he griped about the same.
It’s a little harsh to call Ronaldo’s performance disappointing, though. The problem is that Ronaldo only rarely runs into a team that can shut him down effectively, so he’s not sure what to do when it does happen. The boy may be good, but he’s still got a lot to learn.

I thought it ridiculous to repeatedly call ALL of Milan’s goals “cheap”. Did he miss his squad’s first score in last week’s match? At least the Beeb got it right. They blasted Man-U for getting smoked by a better squad.
Liverpool gonna have some issues in Athens.

The only thing that was cheap about Milan’s performance …….. the price they charged SAF and his boys on lesssons of how dominate and destroy teams in a high profile, important match. Yes, yes that price was cheap indeed….. it cost $0.00. He is arrogant and hypocritical, his remarks should have been expected.

One of the commentators on English television, I remember, agreed with your point, Lisa… “This isn’t reality… Reality is Kaka’”

I’m glad someone stopped Ronaldo. His ego was getting too big for his own good.
But it’s harsh when your manager says that.

Did the setup for Milan’s second goal remind anyone else of Italy’s first goal against Germany in the World Cup?
Pirlo caught the ball again and sent it to the exact position in front of the goal :)

I agree someone need to prove that ronaldo isnt that great everyone seems to underestimates the power of a good italian defense and counter attack its not all about getting the ball running like a maniac and doing step overs and fancy tricks cough ronaldo his perfomance wasnt “dissapointing” so to speak just reality. So all in all Kaka better than ronaldo

Forget about CRonaldo. It was all about Gattuso and Kaka. Gattuso dominated the game and ManU didn’t have an answer to his midfield dominance. CRonaldo was scared, you could see it in his face, because every time he got the ball, he knew Gattuso was coming. And that’s a scary thing, to know you’re gonna get clobbered every time you touch the ball. And once Kaka got the ball, it was the quick transition game that killed ManU. SAF assigned Vidic to shadow Kaka but he was out of his league. Kaka ran rampant all over the field in both games. 3 goals in 2 games… No contest. Athens will be interesting, to say the least!
