Completely Awesome Viola Rumors

By: Martha | July 4th, 2007

Best. Picture. EVER.Obviously I am writing this up as quickly as possible before facts emerge to destroy all our fun, but at the moment Fiorentina fans are waiting on a tantalizing mystery signing owner Diego della Valle has spent the last 48-or-so hours teasing like crazy. Needless to say, no facts about this player are known — apart from the fact that he’s going to be “a gift,” and therefore totally awesome — and the names are flying this and fast.

The first name to be floated was the best, because it was so completely outrageous: Carlos Tevez. You know, the genius Argie striker who is being courted by all the biggest clubs in the world? Yeah, he’ll pick the Viola over Inter and Arsenal and their salaries of magnificent obscenity. Really, I think even the most passionate of Fiorentina fans laughed at that one. I mean, does della Valle have that kind of money, even when he’s playing Monopoly?

Shortly after the Tevez story was thrown on the trash heap, however, came my personal favorite of the bunch: Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma. Mmm … Quaresma. Ahem. Granted his club are asking way, way too much for him (as Greg detailed yesterday at the Portuguese Liga blog), but bringing in a speedly, productive winger (who, granted, may or may not care at all about his team) would be a big plus for the Viola. According to the annoyingly source-free accounts at Transfer Market Web, the two clubs had a agreement last winter under which Fiorentina could score themselves some Quaresma action for the bargain fee of €16 million, but if the deal isn’t sealed soon, that price tag will expire and all will be lost. Speed is of the essence here, people! Get on that Portuguese!

Or, if Portuguese flash doesn’t work for you, perhaps a naked Swede will? The late entry into the Viola gift signing sweepstakes is none other than Calvin Klein’s favorite footballer, Freddie Ljungberg. Mad modeling skills aside, Ljungberg is aging, dead weight for Arsenal and can surely be had (so to speak) for what, in today’s market, will probably look like a pittance; Fiorentina have supposedly offered €8 million, which may be a pittance too small.

Yeah, I saw those Tevez rumors. I thought that Tuttosport only printed completely fabricated stories regarding their beloved Juve. Plus, if he doesn’t want to join the Argentine-filled, rich, squad at Inter, I can’t see him coming to Fiorentina. Obviously, he’s a tremendous player that I would love to see in the team, but I’m thinking there is no way that would happen.

On the other hand, Quaresma is tremendous, and a much better player at this point than any of the other wingers that Fiorentina have been linked with (Ljungberg and Semioli).

It is crazy to see Fiorentina doing all of this wheeling and dealing in the transfer market, as it has been awhile since they’ve been in a position to attract players. I reiterate my worry that they might change too much in the team, but I’m very excited to see them at this point. It has been quite awhile since they were buying several high quality players, and hopefully they will remain near the top of the table in Serie A next year.

It is out of my jurisdiction to report the Veron to Inter rumors, but I think if he does come back he should have to fight Adriano to see whose stays at Inter, imagine the PPV revune on that brawl.

I’ve been trying to hold off on reporting that to see if anything else comes up on it, Gianfranco, but it may go up later today. I’m sort of embarrassed to say I’d like to have him back, but then I’m contractually required to be a big whore for the Argies. (And I think Veron would beat Adriano with one hand tied behind his back.)

tmc, if Quaresma ended up at Fiorentina I very well might die of joy. It’d be interesting to see if Prandelli could help him sort out his attitude — dare I even imagine Mutu as something of a mentor?

Wasn’t Veron’s italian legal battle just recently cleared up? Something about passport fraud, or maybe transfer fraud?

Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that. It was passport fraud, he either had a fake Italian passport, or had obtained one based on false statements. He was cleared at the time (it was when he was with Lazio), but a bunch of other South Americans were banned, I think. But yeah, some lingering element of it was sorted recently — did he pay a fine, or something?

It’s likely going to be Wesley Sneijder from Ajax for 12-13m.

He’s very talented but rumor has it he’s a clubhouse cancer. He’s not well-liked in the Netherlands.

For what it’s worth, one of my college roommates used to play with Fiorentina on FIFA and he picked up Sneijder and the team was absolutely disgusting. He fit well on the game. Obviously, Della Valle took that into consideration.

While he blows in every way compared to Quaresma (with whom I have an unhealthy and difficult to explain obsession), that’d be a great buy on paper. The clubhouse cancer this is terrifying, though, esp since the team really seemed to come together last season — you’d think an aspect of Fiorentina’s market-smarts would be avoiding the players who destroy things from the inside (filthiness in video games notwithstanding).

Do you know details about why everyone hates him, Chris?

He’s a cocky prick and he was before he got really good. Very much a Napoleon complex supposedly.

Judging by the relative youth and impressionability of some of the team, I’m sure this is a wonderful purchase for the Viola.

I also just saw it on goal.com. Which makes everything I just said 100% false.

So Chris, Sneijder and Ibra are like lost brothers except Ibra is cool and Sneijder is just a prick

Jeez. Plus, Zlatan is, like, really tall. He can’t possibly have a a Napoleon complex.
