D-Day for Palermo

By: Martha | January 3rd, 2007

Happy happy, slightly scary.January 4 is marked with a big, red “X” on calendars all over Palermo right now: Amauri, the team’s best striker (not to mention its best fake-Italian-in-waiting), will have his damaged knee scanned tomorrow, and will find out then if he needs surgery or not. Call me crazy, but if the guy is going to need surgery, why is he just being examined NOW? I know sometimes swelling makes accurate tests impossible right after the injury, but it’s been weeks! Surely the swelling was down within three or four days of the Siena match.

As you might expect, despite rather dire words from the team doctor, Amauri remains optimistic, telling the press that he feels great and expects to be back soon, even if it means giving up his extended vacation. “Obviously,” he said, “I am not happy about being sidelined when both Palermo and Amauri were doing so well.” (Yes, he’s talking about himself in the third person. Martha is alarmed.)

If he does need surgery, I daresay Palermo are completely screwed. As I’ve said before, the squad is too damn small to sustain injuries to any of the major players, no matter how good the few reliable backups might be. If he escapes the knife, we’ve got to hope he’s a quick healer, and that the team can cling to a Champions League spot for the month or two they have to survive without him.
