Emerson to Milan! No, Wait. Never Mind.
By: Martha | August 15th, 2007
The headlines of all the major sports papers in Italy today are shouting the news of Emerson’s arrival in Milan, on loan with an option to buy from Real Madrid. Which would be just fine, were it not for a little statement on the Milan website that says “AC Milan denies the purchase of Emerson. It was not possible to find an economic agreement between the two clubs. The deal has been called off.” Oh.
There’s precious little detail about the economic difficulty available in the Italian press, but reports from Spain over the past few days suggest the two teams were very far apart on the player’s value. Emerson cost €16 million when he arrived from Juventus two years ago, and they want at least €10 million for him now — it’s understandable that Real might have been a wee bit unhappy with Milan’s apparent refusal to offer more than €5 million.
One wonders what the hell went on during the last 24 hours that enabled the two clubs to first make and then break and agreement in such quick succession. All I can think of is a)a spectacularly bad translator who turned “when pigs fly” into “you got it, dog!”, or b)hallucinogenic drugs. Let this be a lesson to you, kids: Negotiate sober. And with translators you trust.

This one has me quite puzzled… I checked the Gazzetta.it quite frequently yesterday to get an update on the news, and unless I my eyes deceived me enormously, I don’t remember seeing an article confirming Emerson’s arrival to AC Milan. And if there’s a newspaper that would have clinched the story first it would definitely have been Gazzetta (given that they’re slightly Inter and Milan-biased).
Even using their search engine yields no results: it only finds the article that denies his arrival (along with an excerpt of the statement made by Milan’s official website).
Unless maybe… the person that wrote the article decided to delete it from the database once the news was denied.
What seems more likely (my guess) is that it was Channel4 who got a bit hasty in translating (and made a mistake). In any case, Channel4 mentions August 15 for the Gazzetta article, and I know for a fact that it was not published on that date. If anything, it would have been published the day before (I tend to go to bed very late at night, usually past the time they update their news back in the old country).

Marco, I wish I’d have bought a La Gazzetta today but by the time I got to the newsstand they were all gone, so I can’t verify or deny the headline. (I do know that not everything in the paper edition turns up online, but beyond that I have nothing useful to provide.) If I go out again later, I’ll check another newsstand and see if I can at least see the front page.

thank the lord. I hate Emerson and would never want to see him in a Milan jersey. What I’m not understanding is if we’re desperately looking for a midfielder, why couldn’t we just keep Massimo Donati as a sub instead of selling him to Celtic? He’s a pretty good player.

maybe donati was not looking for a whole lot of bench time and actually wanted to play some… but this transfer season has been pretty whacko so it could be anyone’s guess i suppose..
