Fallout From the Turin Derby Arrests
By: Martha | October 3rd, 2007
Even though there hasn’t been much talk about it, there were 50 arrests surrounding Sunday’s derby match in Turin, and it looks as though, as with the trouble at Napoli several weeks ago, the repercussions for supporters will go well beyond the day in question. It’s already been announced that away fans will be banned from Sunday’s match between Juve and Fiorentina at Stadio Artemio Franchi (Woo hoo, more seats for home support!) and, while things are always tense between those two groups of supporters, such a measure would never have been taken were it not for the violence at the derby. Additionally, some Torino fans will apparently be banned from their own ground when Toro takes on Samp this weekend.
Napoli fans, meanwhile, are still suffering from the actions of those who caused trouble when the club hosted Livorno last week: Their ground was closed for the match with Genoa over the weekend, and traveling support has now been banned from the San Siro for Saturday’s clash with Inter. Cripes.
As Taib pointed out in the comments last time I mentioned the crowd trouble, while the continuing trouble is never a good thing, the fact that people are being punished for their actions certainly is. Before the crisis last winter, this sort of extensive fallout from crowd trouble would never have occurred; we’ll see if greater attention to the problems causes them to diminish or just pisses people off more.
