Flamini Joins Juve’s Shopping List?
By: Martha | December 18th, 2007
Though neither of them would arrive before summer, Juve seem to be lining up some pretty impressive targets ahead of the opening of the winter transfer window. First, of course, there’s the ever-present Olof Mellberg, who has confirmed Juve’s interest and, since his contract ends this summer, could enter into negotiations with the club next month to sort out a deal for next season.
The Mellberg story, though, has been around pretty much since August — the new name in the Juve transfer rumors is that of Mathieu Flamini who, now that he’s settled into a regular spot at Arsenal, reportedly thinks he deserves more money that they’re willing to spend. According to The Times, Flamini turned his nose up at Arsenal’s preliminary offer of £40,000/week, and is now at least making noises about being willing to leave: “I am a free agent in January, so we will see what happens. I am happy here, but we will see.”
Ah, “we will see,” the first negotiating tool every young professional is taught. It not only makes your club sit up and pay attention by suggesting you’re willing to look elsewhere, but it also brings other clubs running, on the off-chance you really are ready to listen to offers. Frankly, given his performance this season and how well he’s been working with the rest of the team’s tiny midfield, it would be stunning if Arsenal were to let Flamini go, but that doesn’t mean His People can’t (or won’t) send out some feelers next month. If they do, one of them will surely be in Juve’s direction, if only to get a nice salary quote to take back to London.
(Oh, and there’s always Rafael van der Vaart, too.)

If Flamini’s looking at Juve to get more than £40,000/week, he’d better think again. Juve are not the kind to fork out heavy money when it comes to salaries, not for a player like Flamini.
