Get That Grain of Salt Ready: Van Der Vaart to Juve?
By: Martha | January 4th, 2008
Mysterious, unnamed German newspapers are reporting today that transfer window man-whore Rafael Van Der Vaart is on the verge of being sold to his most determined suitor Juvenetus, though he wouldn’t actually leave Hamburg until the summer. If true, this would be a massive coup for the Old Lady who, after (allegedly) getting rejected several times already this week, will have successfully beaten off (so to speak) most of Europe for the Dutchman’s services.
Again, this should all be taken with a really, really big grain of salt, but according to the German press, the two clubs have come to an agreement on a price of about €15 million — almost triple what Hamburg paid for him from in 2005 — with a five-year contract being offered the midfielder. There’s no word on what the contract would be worth to Van Der Vaart, but since he’s reportedly turned down €4 million/season offer from Hamburg, he ain’t gonna come cheap.
Based on all available evidence, Van Der Vaart is obviously going somewhere this summer, and if his club have anything to do with it, the deal is going to be worked out NOW, lest they be forced to part with him for a paltry €1 million in the summer. And, though the player’s been associated with every club on the continent (and a few off it) in the past few months, Juve have always been in the picture, and he’s allegedly Claudio Ranieri’s primary target. All of that gives credence to this report, but it sure would be nice to know the actual source. What’s German for “Tuttosport“?

If the german word for national team is “man-shaft”, I think I’ll hold off on guessing what Tuttosport would be.

Nedved has to retired at some point, though. Doesn’t he? And Tiago? Really? Is he actually going to be in Turin after this month?
(Mike, you’re scaring me.)

I actually checked Bild pretty thoroughly, Sofia, I wonder where/when it was published. (Though they could be like La Gazzetta, and not put all the good stuff online.)

Bild have been obsessed with Van der Vaart ever since he was first rumoured to be coming to Germany, largely due to the fact that his wife is extremely photogenic. They began mentioning Juve as a possible destination at least a month ago, and the Gazzetta picked up on that, though the recent stories are rather more concrete (primarily because HSV have announced that they have formally terminated negotiations over a new contract).
