Inter Dealing: Julio Cesar Renews, Moratti Eyes Lucarelli
By: Martha | April 30th, 2007
Though just yesterday our beloved Tribal Football was describing Julio Cesar as “unsettled” at Inter, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that the Brazilian has signed a new deal which will keep him with the Nerazzurri through 2012, earning about €3.5 million/year. While the sane among us would assume this means Inter are out of the Buffon sweepstakes, this is football so things that seem logical don’t necessarily follow (witness Milan’s continued interest in Buffon despite resigning Dida). That said, if Massimo Moratti is to be believed, Julio Cesar is Inter’s number one and he’s no longer interested in the Juve keeper — we’ll see how long that lasts.
Moratti may be swearing off interest in Buffon, but he’s suddenly developed a fascination with Cristiano Lucarelli, who may or may not be planning to end his love affair with Livorno this summer. Well, though he’s not the winger Inter need to replace Figo, above everything else Lucarelli is a consistent goal-scorer which makes him an appealing target for pretty much any team, particularly if that team is going to lose Hernan Crespo over the summer. The striker’s transfer fee is thought to be about about €5 million, and Livorno are rumored to be demanding two Inter players on loan as part of any deal.

Ugh. Well, besides Mariano, Cesar is my least favorite player at Inter. I don’t dislike him, sure, but Inter could do so much better. Whatever happened to Carini? That kid is good. And Toldo’s not ripe for retirement yet.

I don’t get why most Inter fans I know dislike/hate Julio Cesar. I think he is a great keeper and has played very well this season. I am happy with him as Inter’s # 1 keeper. That’s not say I wouldn’t be happy if GiGi came, but Cesar is good. Buff will be somewhere else next year. He needs to be playing in European competitions & I think Juve owe it to him to let him go somewhere else.
