Inter Prepare Indignant Appeal; UEFA Prepare to Ignore It

Once he stopped sputtering with rage at the injustice done his (of course) entirely innocent club yesterday, Inter boss Massimo Moratti describe UEFA’s fine and bans this way: “More than a sentence, this is a slap in the face.” Come on, Massimo — tell us how you really feel, would you?
Later, having found his tranquilzers regained control of himself, Moratti sounded much wiser when he spoke to club’s website. No longer in an indignant fury, the President instead said “I want to understand the reasons” before he offically labels the punishments “excessive.” Going into zen mode, he told the press “There’s a reason for everything.” Thank you, sensei.
No matter how sanguine Moratti sounded yesterday afternoon, though, it’s a virtual certainty that they’ll be filing an appeal very shortly. An appeal which, as UEFA made clear today, is unlikely to have any impact whatsoever. In the mind of UEFA chief Michel Platini (who is feeling like a bit of a hardass today) the punishments — which he describes as “radical” — are “absolutely justified.” And, given Platini’s law-and-order approach since he got the gig, it’s likely he’ll go to the mat to uphold them.
Dr. Moratti, I know you’re used to Italian justice where everything is lighted upon appeal, but I don’t like your chances with this one. Why don’t you take the high road, accept the punishments, and get back to that post-training Argentine BBQ already?
