Is There Actual Substance to Milan’s Conspiracy Theory? And Will That Fact Make Anyone Stop Laughing?

By: Martha | November 8th, 2006

Ah CarloIt’s sort of a truism in Italy that even the most utterly outrageous conspiracy theories have a kernel of truth at their cores. (Like, you know, the long-held belief that the officials were all on the side of Juventus. That sort of thing.) So I’m clearly a total sucker for being surprised last night when I read that Milan’s endless whining about the injustice of the calls that have been going against them this season, specifically in the Atalatana game last weekend, might not be entirely baseless. Whereas we all quite reasonably laughed in the face of their sour grapes and figured that playing with only 11 men was the root of the “problem,” it turns out that, yes, Ancelotti, Berlusconi and the rest could be onto something.

According to an “investigation” in yesterday’s Corriere Della Sera, there were some plausible irregularities in the Atalanta match, most of them stemming from the decision to assign Pieri to referee the match. I’ll let you go read the details yourself, but Pieri has several very good reasons to hold a grudge against Ancelotti, who fingered him as a (possibly) corrupt official in Calciopoli-related testimony this summer. I mean, damn. Even the saintly Collina would have a hard time remaining impartial under those circumstances.
