Just So You Know, Mancio Doesn’t Hate Spalletti

Oh yeah. Much anger there. When he wasn’t talking about how rubbish his team were in Turkey (See? At least he noticed. That’s progress.), Inter’s Roberto Mancini also spent his time with the press yesterday denying that he’s feuding with Luciano Spalletti.

Apparently things have been bubbling under since Mancini blamed his team’s Supercup loss to Roma on a shortage of right-sided players as opposed to playing a better team, something which understandably pissed Spalletti off. Then, the issue was brought up again at the weekend in Mancini’s post-match press conference, during which he reportedly saw fit to call Spalletti a “crybaby” (warning: possible very bad translation at work there) for his constant portrayal of his team as an underdog, and associated refusal to acknowledge their good chance for the Scudetto. Not willing to let such an attack on his manhood go, Spalletti took it to a whole different level earlier this week, responding to media questions about the crybaby thing by saying “I will make him give me the handkerchief he used to cry in after the Supercup.” Oh, snap! (If you’re La Gazzetta, the whole affair is known as the “controversy of the handkerchief,” because they’re just that awesome.)

So now Mancio is backpedaling like crazy, saying he meant his words as praise and all the other nonsense you’d expect him from someone who suddenly realized he’s having a war of words with someone far more clever than he. Hopefully l’affaire du handkerchief will survive at least until the end of the month when Inter visit Roma — there’s nothing like a stadium full of fans waving handkerchiefs and coaches who are feuding to spice up a big match.
