Let’s All Blame the Referees!
By: Martha | September 27th, 2007
For though of you who were blissfully unaware of the terrible injustices that took place yesterday, Rodrigo Taddei and Carlo Ancelotti want everyone to know that Roma and Milan didn’t get full points because of the GOD DAMN REFEREES. Yes, that’s reasonable. I mean, dropped points are very rarely the fault of the people on the pitch, right? And surely the fact that Milan managed to score on only one of their 19 shots had nothing to do with the loss.
Apparently not if you ask Ancelotti, anyway. He’s very worked up about an apparent handball by Amauri (who will surely tell you til the day he dies that it was his shoulder) that led to Palermo’s first goal, and has gotten big cheese Adriano Galliani so upset he’s insisting The Great Bald One, referee designator Pierluigi Collini, look into the matter and get back to the club with his response. Oh, and also? Milan’s draw with Siena last weekend was due to the referee as well. Nothing to do with Milan’s utter inability to score. Nothing at all.
In Rome, meanwhile, Luciano Spalletti is keeping discussions of the referees to a minimum, and is instead lamenting his team’s draw with Fiorentina based on things like Roma’s failure to take advantage of scoring chances, and the mistakes that allowed the Viola to tie the match. That’s because Spaeletti has many, many brain cells to rub together, and knows that you’re not going to get better if you blame all your failings (and by last count Roma had about two of those, total) on referees. No one, however, taught that lesson to Rodrigo Taddei who, despite leaving the match in the first half with an injury, saw enough to be sure the officials screwed Roma over. And intentionally, too — “The referee only blew for fouls by us, and persecuted us.” Christ. This is me, rolling my eyes. (And yeah, I like Fiorentina, but the Roma crazies for the most part think a draw was a fair result, and blame the problems on — gasp — Roma players. Who are we to argue with them?)

What do you mean by Roma crazies….
There were two legitimate gripes for Roma, with Mexes’ early yellow for breathing too hard on Pazzini (foul? yes. card? please) and only the yellow for Mutu when he should’ve been sent off immediately for that blatant and intentional elbow – which I’ll be bullshit about if he isn’t suspended. Other than that, I don’t think there was anything to bitch about. The penalty was Ferrari’s fault and Fiorentina deserved a point. (Even though the fouls were heavily in the Viola’s favor)
Ancelotti has a legitimate gripe though.

I haven’t seen the game yet (and probably won’t, since it will make me cry), so I can’t judge the veracity of Ancelotti’s statements — but true or not, he needs to leave off making excuses and start focusing on the serious problem Milan are having in Serie A, namely, their complete inability to hit the back of the net. I’m not going to throw up my hands and start crying “get rid of Gila!!!”, because frankly, we have no one (competent or incompetent) to replace him, but something, somehow, needs to be done.
Strike practice, at the very least.

Chris, is it possible Roma just fouled more? (That’s actually a mostly seriously question. It’s hard for me to come up with a scenario under which refs are corrupt for the Viola and/or against Roma.)
And seriously, Milan can’t score to save their lives — you saw their goal difference. How could Ancelotti seriously say any dropped points are the fault of referees?

No, I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. Roma did foul often. I didn’t think the refereeing was anything to cry over. Although I still haven’t figured out what happened when Mirko went end over end.

the refs for the past 4 juve games have been crap and we only lost one of them so i am not saying anything about the outcomes of games. however during the udine game we scored a tying goal but the ref called a mysterious foul just before the ball when in. juve had a crappy ref the past 4 games, milan have been having crap refs, i mean collina really needs to figure out his refing situation because this is just stupid now. i thought canadian (well north american refs overall) were crap but wow these italian refs are starting to make them look …..dare i say it…good :S

i think its a 2 part solution… we lost because we couldn’t score and because the ref wasnt the brightest… im not blaming the ref for the loss, but that was a wrong decision

Amauri has admitted it was a handball but says it was involuntary.
(Also, Jamie, WTF? The riots had less to do with anything on the field than they did with a segment Catania’s “fans” being batshit insane and completely out of control. I don’t think most sports fans keep an arsenal in their team’s stadium.)

Just saw that, Lisa — go Amauri! Who knew they’d let him be so honest?
