Lucarelli: Staying, But Not ‘Cause He Wants To
By: Martha | June 12th, 2007
Poor Cristiano Lucarelli. He had a falling out with the fans he loves and is disgusted with his club in general. He’s finally had enough and wants to leave, maybe to finally earn the money his production deserves. So, he hung out the “Goal-Scoring Machine For Sale! Get Him While He’s Hot! (So To Speak.)” sign and sat back to receive offers, play teams off against one another and, ultimately, move to a big club and bask in the glory of a spotlight somewhere.
Which is all well and good, right? He’s a stud and should collect, for once. Nothing wrong with that. There’s one problem, though: No one came calling.
Despite rumors of interest in Italy and abroad, Lucarelli himself says no one has been interested enough to contact him and actually make an offer — or, perhaps more accurately, interested enough to pay the £7 million the club are asking for his services — so he’s resigned himself to staying with Livorno for another year. Poor, sad Cristiano.
Lucarelli’s really sort of in a tough position, because though he wants out of Livorno, he isn’t the sort of player who would ever give anything less that 100% so the club certainly wouldn’t mind keeping him, even if it did make him unhappy. As a result, they’re willing to risk asking top price for the aging striker — if someone will pay, they’ll take it money, if not they’re holing onto 15-20 goals/season. For the club, it’s pretty much win-win; Lucarelli, meanwhile, is sort of screwed.

That’s terrible, when you expect people to react, and no one does anything.
Maybe he won’t give 100% anymore b/c he’s unhappy (who knows?)
