Mancini and Mourinho: Musical Managerial Chairs?
By: Martha | January 25th, 2007
Under a fairly awesome headline reading “Mancini is Jose minus aggro,” London’s ever-reliable Sun reported today that Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich is totally over The Special One, and has already started down the path of finding his replacement. According to the Sun, Abromovich Abramovich is understandably smitten by Roberto Mancini, whose success at Inter this season has only raised his managerial profile in the footballing world. The Italian has reportedly long been interested in managing in England, and the talent at Chelsea would be hard for an ambitious gaffer to resist. Combine that with his refusal to sign a new contract with Inter — the current one expires this summer — and you’ve got enough facts to cobble together a pretty plausible story, at least to the point of mutual interest.
More important for us, however, is the ever-present possibility that Mourinho and Mancini might simply switch seats this summer, with the Portuguese bringing his ego, smarts and fabulous wardrobe to Milan while Mancio takes his ill-advised hairstyle and eerily even-keeled demeanor to London. Fingers freaking crossed there is more to this than a bored press corp getting a wild hair about high-profile 40-something managers.

While I would love to have Mourinho in Serie A to see how he gets on, I’m not sure about Mancio coming to England. Remember he played about three games for Leicester at the end of his career. And could he match up to previous incumbent Luca Vialli? Certainly not in the hair department…

Fixed, thanks Blue Blood.
Forever is a really long time, man — Mourinho doesn’t seem the sort to settle down and rest on his laurels, esp when he’s in conflict with the president. It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out.
