Mancini Sack Watch: The Dreaded Vote of Confidence

By: Martha | September 25th, 2007

Yeah, that’s trouble. It’s been a tough week for Inter coach Roberto Mancini, what with his everyone pushing Jose Mourinho towards his job, defender Nelson Rivas collapsing in training, and his team not only drawing with Livorno, but actually managing to make them look lively and threatening. (Just so we’re clear, this is Livorno we’re talking about.) Plus, before Sunday’s match there was an article in Corriere dello Sport reporting that tension at Inter “is reaching [the] breaking point.” Dun dun! Cue dramatic music and montage of Mancini yelling, Zlatan laughing and Adriano crying (and then reaching for a beer), while Moratti shakes his head in disgust.

Never fear though, friends! People have been coming out of the woodwork to support Mancio, and everything’s going to be just fine. And when I say “people,” I mean “Fernando Orsi and Massimo Moratti.” Oh, super. When your only supporters are the manager of one of the worst teams in the league (and a guy who used to WORK FOR YOU) and the owner of your team, who will say pretty much anything, you know you’re in trouble. I mean, people, Moratti said “Mancini is in no danger at all” — I think we all know that means it’s only a matter of time now. Because, while I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I’m pretty sure that 48 of every 50 coaches who receive such assurances from owners are out of their jobs within the next four months.

If Cassano scores a hat-trick for Sampdoria tomorrow and Zaltan can’t get four to secure Inter some points, prepare for the Macio Out, Mourinho In talk to reach a fever pitch. Eeeeeeexcellent.

I think that Mancini and Mourinho are just about the two most handsome managers around. I'd be happy with either of them .............

  • Ady I'm slightly excited -- I'll just keep clinging to the rumors until he ends up somewhere else.

Kirby, I think the further Mourinho gets from Chelsea and the meddling owner there, the more willing he'll be to let his ego convince him he can make a difference at Inter. I'm honestly not sure he's a great fit, but I think he would love the daily challenge of the media, as well as the opportunity to be a hero by sorting things out. He's such a great motivator and manager of men, and if he could get this team to play for one another, it certainly couldn't hurt.

ive been following inter since i was 8. mancio is the only coach that has been able to take my beloved below-par inter and turn them in to an actual team of. before mancio, every inter side in recent history was a bunch of 11 individuals(at least thats what i think). i just like how he puts things together i guess. i firmly believe that teh only reason that he didnt get sacked yet is because because moratti is trying to be like facchetti.

martha, do you really think that jose want the job and do you think he would be good for inter?

Martha, you must just be drooling at the prospect of having the Special One coaching your favorite team. I look forward to the continuing rumors...

  • Inter's defensive options are pretty limited right now, what with Matrix and Chivu both out injured. And now Maicon is suspended, so they'll be shuffling things around even more in the back.

I think big time football is all about overreaction and itchy trigger fingers -- there's very little room for reason here, particularly among the big, rich clubs who are under so much pressure to be perfect all the time.

Kirby, what about Mancio makes you think he's the one for the future? (That's not a sarcastic question at all, I'm curious.) And I'm sure the Special One is loving this, are you kidding? His ego is actually getting bigger now that he's been sacked. Sorry, I mean left by mutual agreement.

i think everyone is overreacting...inter is second in serie a. plus, i cant remember the last time inter actually made a good start to a champions league. mancio is the man for the future. if he is sacked then that wont be good at all. i wonder what the special one thinks about all this...i really think that cordoba should be benched for a few games though. is it me or has anyone else realized that he isnt really defending well?
