Milan Stirring the Transfer Pot Again
By: Martha | October 16th, 2007
Despite concluding the Emerson deal with a public assurance that they wouldn’t get back into the market again until next summer, the people at Milan are really bad at just sitting on their hands, and are already eying up new players for their giant shopping list.
Near the top of that list, at least according to his very chatty agent, is Palermo striker Amauri, who is said to be in the sights of several major Italian teams. His agent, while saying all sorts of lovely things about his client’s relationship with his club, is nevertheless headed to Milan this week for what are probably introductory talks, and is already making veiled threats of a departure if Palermo fail to secure a Champions League spot next season. Nice. Since they need several strikers, anyone who plays that position is going to end up being associated with Milan at some point, but the CL talk suggests nothing would happen until next summer. Milan sure are putting a lot of eggs in their Pato and Ronaldo-will-play-again-someday baskets, aren’t they?
While they talk about the future with other peoples’ strikers and spend a lot of time praying over the ones they already have, Milan are also apparently sparing some time to watch World Cup 2010 qualifiers, because in the wake of Juan Roman Riquelme’s fantastic goals against Chile over the weekend, they’re reportedly quite eager to add a bit of magic to their already world-class midfield. Well, they’re going to have a lot of company in that ambition, particularly if Villarreal really are going to let him go for €3 million. Hmm. I wonder what club he could join that would allow him to play alongside a lot of his international teammates …

Please, Martha…no Riquelme at Inter. JesusMotherMaryandJoseph. You already have 34 strikers on the roster, now you need 56 midfielders to boot. I watched the Argentina-Chile match almost exclusively to see Riquelme and he did not disappoint. The free kicks he took in the first half are going to get all the publicity, and rightfully so, but he really has such tremendous skill. You tend to forget it because the collective think tank at Villareal can’t seem to get this guy on the pitch. I don’t care if he got the 16-year old President’s daughter pregnant, this guy is a playmaker’s playmaker.
I’d love to see him in Serie A…can we just send him somewhere other than Milan, Inter or Juve? Maybe he’d like to join Lavezzi under the Vesuvian lights?

OMG I was just writing up something on the JRR rumour. It’s such bollocks. The only reason Milan should want him would be to keep him out of Inter’s grasp. Yes, world-class and everything, but unless he can suddenly develop an ungovernable instinct to hold the ball up, go forward and score tons of goals: no plz.

But Joe, he’s an attacking mid! Despite the glut of mids, Inter are painfully short on the attacking variety, he’d be very welcome I’m sure.
I’m not sure a 29-year-old stud would be willing to go to the Viola, but at the price he’s supposedly going to go for, they might actually be in the running ….

he’s too slow for Milan’s style of play.

I think Riquelme’s big thing was he didn’t want to move his family to a non-Spanish speaking country (it’s all about the children), which kinda limited his options to either South America, Spain or Liverpool. Whiskey Nose wanted him badly but he wouldn’t go for this reason. He’ll wind up somewhere in La Liga.
Keep dreaming about an attacking mid, Marth. Moratti has sent the scouts to watch, and probably bid for, Karim Benzema, who is – shocking, I know – a striker. If this guy had any less of a clue how to put together a roster, he’d be Domenech.

Does Benzema have some ancient Argentine roots?

I think his main goal might be to bring in as many strikers as possible so he can mock Milan. Much like, as roswitha said, Milan are trying to stockpile attacking mids just so Inter can’t have them. Ah, big time sports.

I love Roman, but can’t help thinking that anywhere other than Spain or Argentina, people would just mark and kick him out of the game.
He belongs at Boca – surely they can pay the amount that’s being bandied about.
